Indianapolis — Five-time defending national champion North Dakota State is the No. 1 seed in the FCS playoffs, while the University of New Hampshire made the field for the 13th straight year.

The NCAA announced the 24-team playoff field on Sunday. The top eight seeds receive first-round byes and host second-round games. Joining the Bison in the top four are Eastern Washington at No. 2, Jacksonville State, last season’s runner-up, at No. 3 and James Madison at No. 4.

The Dukes will face the winner of Saturday’s first-round game between UNH (7-2) and Lehigh (9-2) in Durham. The Wildcats made the field after nipping Maine on Saturday, 24-21, on a 21-yard Morgan Ellman field goal with 7 seconds to play.

No. 5 Sam Houston State, No. 6 The Citadel, No. 7 North Dakota and No. 8 South Dakota State also have first-round byes.

Texas Will EvaluateCoach After Next Game

Austin, Texas — Texas athletic director Mike Perrin says football Charlie Strong’s future with the Longhorns will be decided after the Longhorns’ next game.

Perrin called multiple reports that Texas has decided to fire Strong “rumors,” and said Strong will be evaluated after the Longhorns play TCU on Friday.

That leaves Strong with an uncertain future Monday at his weekly news conference, despite intense speculation that he’ll be dismissed.

Texas is 5-6 after losing in overtime to lowly Kansas on Saturday. Strong is 16-20 in his three seasons and still has two years left on a guaranteed contract that pays him more than $5 million per season.

SoccerChelsea Ascends to EPL Lead

Middlesbrough, England — Chelsea moved to the top of the English Premier League on Sunday after a first-half strike by Diego Costa earned the visitors a convincing 1-0 victory at Middlesbrough.

Chelsea dominated the game and was rewarded for its unrelenting pressure when Costa scored four minutes before the break, reacting quickest to a loose ball after a goalmouth melee and firing home from close range. It was his 10th goal of the season.

GolfJutanugarn Wins LPGA Honor

Naples, Fla. — Arya Jutanugarn is the LPGA’s player of the year, and In Gee Chun is the tour’s scoring champion.

Jutanugarn wrapped up her season by finishing tied for fourth Sunday at the CME Group Tour Championship, good enough to clinch the season-long Race to CME Globe points competition and $1 million bonus.

And Chun finished with three consecutive birdies to rally and grab the Vare Trophy, the season scoring crown that would have gone to Lydia Ko if Chun’s 10-footer on the final hole would have missed.

Ko would have been player of the year with a win Sunday. But she finished eight shots back of Charley Hull, who shot a final-round 66 and finished at 19-under for her first LPGA victory.

Hull finished two shots ahead of So Yeon Ryu, that pivotal swing coming on the par-5 17th.

Final PGA Stop IntoFour-May Playoff

St. Simons Island, Ga. — Hughes Mackenzie was the third player to have a putt to win the RSM Classic. He missed, and four players will have to return in the morning to finish the playoff.

The final PGA Tour event of the year had to go one more day when a sudden-death playoff that began with five players lasted only two holes before it was too dark to continue at Sea Island.

The odd man odd was Billy Horschel, the highest-ranked player of the group. Horschel missed his birdie attempt by a fraction of an inch on the 18th hole in the playoff. Then he missed a routine, 2-foot putt to stay in the game.

MacKenzie, Blayne Barber, Camilo Villegas and Henrik Norlander had to return Monday morning. The winner gets in the Masters.
