Claremont — Mitchell Paquette’s second-half goal sealed the deal for the Stevens High boys soccer team, sending the second-seeeded Cardinals to their first NHIAA Division III semifinal appearnce in 23 years with a 2-1 win over No. 7 Campbell on Sunday afternoon at Monadnock Park.

“It was my senior year the last time Stevens was in the semis,” said Cardinals head coach and Stevens High alum Jason Stone. “It’s pretty special for this group to make it.

“The town is fired up,” he added. “Lots of excitement and support. Feels like the old days of Stevens soccer.”

Stevens’ high-powered offense poured it on in the first half, hitting two crossbars and a post before Noah Spaulding and Ethan Sweet connected for Sweet’s 21st goal of the season. Paquette scored his eighth of the season on a strike from 23 yards out 10 minutes into the second half to give Stevens a 2-0 lead.

Tanner Durkee made 11 saves for the Cardinals. Campbell cut the deficit to one goal with 1:16 remaining in the game.

“They’re a confident bunch right now,” Stone said. “We worked hard defending as a team, and we put players in good positions to get the ball forward.”

The Cardinals (15-2-0) travel to Laconia High to take on No. 6 Belmont on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

No. 1 Derryfield, in D-IV last season, and No. 5 Hopkinton will play the late semifinal game for their own chance at a championship spot. Stevens lost games to both Derryfield and Hopkinton earlier this season and was outscored 9-0 in the two contests combined.

Girls Soccer Hanover 2, Hollis Brookline 1

Hollis, N.H. — Cate Wagner scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the second half against to help the No. 8 Marauders advance to the NHIAA Division II semifinals over the division’s top seed.

Bryn Kable scored on a corner kick in the first half to give Hanover the early lead. Clare Gardner picked up an assist. Mahler Meyerrose made three saves.

Wagner’s goal seemed to wake Hollis Brookline up, said Hanover head coach Doug Kennedy, whose team gave up a penalty kick 17 minutes into the half to help the Cavaliers (13-3-0) cut the deficit to one.

“We were under siege in the last 15 or 16 minutes,” Kennedy said.

Hanover (11-4-1) suffered a 1-0 loss to Hollis Brookline in its regular-season finale on Oct. 21. But with the team firing on all cylinders and the top-seeded team out of the picture, Kennedy likes his team’s chances going forward.

“We’ve been strong all year,” he said. “All of our losses have been against strong teams.”
