White River Junction — The Hartford High boys soccer team took advantage of the home confines of the Maxfield Sports Complex and earned a little revenge in the process.

Led by goalkeeper Jordy Allard, the Hurricanes posted their fourth shutout of the season on Monday afternoon in a 2-0 victory over Brattleboro. The Colonels defeated Hartford on Sept. 24, 3-2, in Brattleboro, handing the Hurricanes their second loss of the year. They haven’t lost since.

“Down there, it’s their field,” said Hartford head coach Kevin Guilbault of his team’s first game with the Colonels. “It’s really narrow. You play on a football field; everything they throw in goes into the box. It becomes a hard-fought game.”

Senior forward Ben Rouillard notched his fifth goal of the season to get Hartford started. Junior midfielder Mac Sunde tossed in his first goal of the year for insurance.

Guilbault said his team, credited with eight shots on goal, could have had more if not for Hartford’s tendency to shoot high over the crossbar.

Hartford has outscored opponents 25-9 this season. Allard made two saves for his second consecutive shutout.

Hartford is now 6-2-1 through nine games one year after finishing well below .500 in VPA Division II and falling in the first round of the playoffs to Fair Haven in overtime. The win keeps the Hurricanes near the top of the D-II rankings behind undefeated Lake Region (8-0). Hartford hosts streaking Woodstock (7-2-1) on Thursday.

The Wasps (7-2-1) travel to Hartford on Thursday.

Sharon 2, Twinfield 1

Plainfield, Vt. — Richard Morrill scored the game-winning goal midway through the second half as the Phoenix finally seized on one of its many scoring opportunities.

“In the first half, we didn’t take advantage of our chances,” said Sharon head coach Rob Stainton. “We kept their shots to a minimum. It was a scrappy game.”

Sharon was credited with 17 shots on goal. Sam Knoerlein opened the scoring 15 minutes into the game. Twinfield got the equalizer just before halftime. Oliver Skeet-Browning had assists on both Sharon goals. Thatcher Morrison made only one save in the victory.

“It’s a shame; it was one of our better games,” Newport coach Jon Hamel lamented. “It was probably our best passing game of the season.”
