Salem, n.h.
The Woodsville High senior fought through the mist to shoot an 11-over-par 47 on the Salem course’s back nine, winning the medal flight of the NHIAA girls golf championship on Saturday.
Simano shot par on a number of holes to edge Goffstown sophomore Caroline Newell by a single stroke.
Simano placed seventh in the same tournament last year, and the improvement impressed her dad, Engineers coach Brian Simano.
“Brooke had a solid game today. She had several pars and some beautiful, long drives,” Brian Simano said. “I knew she was shooting well, but I think we were both a little bit surprised when we saw the results of the other players and it turned out she’d won.
“That said, I wasn’t surprised that she came through with the win because she’s a solid player when she needs to be.”
Simano followed the footsteps of her older sister, Mayghan, who captured the NHIAA medal flight three years ago. “She’s very pleased with herself for that,” Brain Simano said.
Exeter’s Megan Beever shot 49 for third place, followed by Hanover freshman Meredith Morhun (52) in fourth.
