Sunapee — Strong defensive play remained the hallmark of the Sunapee High girls soccer team following a 3-0 defeat of Moultonborough on Monday night, the Lakers’ sixth shutout in eight games so far this season.

Sunapee gave up a single goal in each of the first two games of the season and has not been scored upon since, improving its record to 7-0-1. The one draw came in a 0-0 deadlock against visiting Gorham on Sept. 9.

The Lakers controlled play in the first half, according to coach Myles Cooney, building a 2-0 lead by halftime. Sydney Clark scored on a header off a Maddie Austin cross seven minutes into the game. Hannah Cooney followed with a long-range strike near the end of the first half. Kate Frederick stretched the field in the second half with a 40-yard pass right to Austin to set up Sunapee’s top scorer for a goal.

“We played a lot of people today, kept a clean sheet and won a game we can learn from,” coach Cooney said. “Once again, I tip my hat to the kids in the back. They keep the ball in the offensive end, pass well and step in front of their marks.”

Keeper Suzanne Rickard made two saves for the shutout. Austin leads the Lakers with 16 goals. Sunapee hosts Wilton-Lyndeborough on Thursday.

Boys SoccerWoodstock 4, Mill River 0

North Clarendon, Vt. — Seniors Cody Carnehammer and Collin Campbell connected three times on goals, the former scoring on each occasion on a pass from the latter, in a shutout win.

Emilio Montano added the Wasps’ other goal on a Cullen McCarthy assist for Woodstock, which required just one save from freshman goalkeeper Steve Bianchi. Woodstock (6-1-1) heads to Brattleboro on Wednesday.

Thetford 2, U-32 2 (2 OT)

Thetford — Connor Brown had a goal and an assist to help the Panthers (4-2-1) earn a hard-fought draw with the Raiders.

Erik Lindahl setup an early Thetford goal with a nice chip pass over the defense to a streaking Brown for a header into the back of the net 18 minutes in. U-32 added goals on both sides of halftime to take the lead before Brown found Dylan Thorborn for an equalizer with 18 minutes left to play.

Keeper Anthony Stoffel had 12 saves for the Panthers, who host Randolph on Wednesday.

Sharon 13, Chelsea 0

Chelsea — Josh Amodeo’s hat trick led the Phoenix (5-2) over the Red Devils.

Olly Skeet-Browning and Thatcher Morrison each added two goals, Richie Morrill and Dylan Carson-Turner each had a goal and two assists, and Cole Ward, Sam Knoerlein and Trabyn Fisk also scored. Sharon then benefitted from an own goal for the baker’s dozen. Fisk, Willy Barnes and Harvey Kelley each had assists.

The Phoenix plays at South Royalton on Friday.

Hazen 6, Oxbow 0

Bradford, Vt. — Junior goalkeeper Mason Brammell held up well under a barrage of Hazen shots, making 16 saves for the Olympians.

“He played a great game,” Oxbow coach Barry Emerson said.

The O’s (0-6-0) host Danville on Wednesday,

Moultonborough 3, Sunapee 0

Sunapee — The Lakers dropped to 4-4 with a defeat to the visiting Panthers.

Moultonborough scored on a penalty kick in the first half and scored early in the second half to take control for good. Carson Garland fired a shot off the crossbar in the first half for Sunapee. Mike Mullen set up a pair of good scoring chances, but the Lakers couldn’t convert.

Goalkeeper Will Palin had nine saves for Sunapee, which plays host to Wilton-Lyndeborough on Thursday.

Field HockeyHartford 4, Rutland 1

White River Junction — Brooke Hurd’s two goals and one assist led the Hurricanes’ victory over the Raiders.

Emma Libbey and Morgan Pero also scored for Hartford (6-1-1). Michaela Ricker added two assists, and Caitlin Gaudette had one helper. Goalie Rachel Loseby had three saves and just missed earning a shutout when the Raiders scored with 8 seconds left to play.

The Canes host Otter Valley on Friday.

Lebanon 0, Kingswood 0 (OT)

Lebanon — Goals proved hard to come by as the Raiders (3-3-1) and Knights battled to a draw.

Lebanon coach Deb Beach praised the continued strong play of defender Emily Hunnewell and goalie Hope Brown (10 saves). The Raiders visit Goffstown on Wednesday.

Kennett 4, Hanover 0

Conway, n.h. — The Marauders dropped to 4-5 with a shutout loss to the Eagles.

Coach Jean Essex praised the play of defenders Johanna Copeland and Aiden Stone along with midfielders Jasmine Lou and Maddie Wallace. Goalie Sophie Cardenali had 14 saves.

Hanover hosts Mascoma on Wednesday.

Stevens 5, John Stark 0

Weare, n.h. — The Cardinals claimed their third straight victory to improve to 7-1-0 to keep pace near the top of the NHIAA Division III standings.

Stevens begins a three-game homestand on Friday against Kearsarge.

GolfNewport Tops Two

Jaffrey, n.h. — Cameron Gebo navigated the tree-lined front nine at The Shattuck in a four-over par score of 40 to lead the Tigers (14-0) to a five-stroke victory.

Brandon Whalen followed with a 49, Darren O’Conner had 51 and Kyle Fish had 52. The Tigers (14-0) host Hopkinton and undefeated Moultonborough on Wednesday afternoon.

Team scores: Newport 192, Mascenic 197, Hillsboro-Deering 222.

Raiders Third

Canterbury, n.h. — Alex Bitler’s 4-over par round of 40 on the front nine at Canterbury Woods Country Club helped the Raiders (14-3) to a third place finish.

Sophomore Graham Ten Haken added a career-best 42, Kyle Pelletier had 43 and Hunter Marsh shot 45 for Lebanon. Bow’s Ronan Lucey won the medal at 37. The Raiders are home today at Eastman Golf Links hosting Winnisquam, Stevens and Fall Mountain.

Team scores: Bow 154, Derryfield 165, Lebanon 170, Belmont 200.

One Up, One Down for Engineers

North Sutton, n.h. — Seanon May shot 48 to help Woodsville (5-12) finish in the middle of a three-school match at the Country Club of New Hampshire.

Host Hopkinton took the team win, with the Hawks’ Nick Fairneny shooting a medal-winning 2-over-par 38. Brooke Simano (56), Travis Stoddard (59) and Ben Simboli (61) completed the Engineers’ scoring.

Woodsville ends its regular season with a match against Sunapee, Farmington and InterLakes at Newport Golf Club on Friday.

VolleyballSunapee 3, Stevens 0

Sunapee — The Lakers controlled play to win in straight sets, 25-7, 25-9 and 25-5.

Lexi Miller and Abi Downey (two kills) led Sunapee from the service line with eight aces each. Emily Devore added four aces and one kill. Meg Frederick had three aces and two kills. Hannah Drummond had four kills and two aces.

Sunapee hosts Mascoma on Thursday.

West Canaan — The Royals lost in straight sets (25-7, 25-8, 25-11) to fall to 1-6 and play at Sunapee on Thursday.

College FootballDartmouth Pair Honored

Hanover — The Big Green doubled up on weekly honors, with Folarin Orimolade winning the Ivy League defensive player of the week and Hunter Hagdorn winning rookie of the week honors award following Saturday’s 35-10 defeat of Holy Cross.

Orimolade led the Big Green defense with eight tackles and a career-high two sacks. Wide receiver Hagdorn tied the game at 7-7 on a 10-yard end around and finished with three catches.
