Quechee — The Mid Vermont Christian boys soccer team was optimistic heading into Friday’s season opener against Chelsea. The Eagles weren’t sure they’d be quite this productive.

Sophomore Josh King scored four goals with an assist — more than doubling his scoring total from a year ago — as MVCS wrapped up the Red Devils, 7-1.

Daniel Roberts, another sophomore, scored his first two career goals after finishing with five assists as a freshman.

Mid Vermont led 6-0 at halftime during its second straight opening-day win over Chelsea.

“We were hoping for a win, planning for a win,” said Eagles coach Zach Bryan. “But you never know. We weren’t quite expecting this.”

Nate Twarog added a goal and Jake Roberts notched a pair of assists for the Eagles, who are looking to improve following a 2-8 campaign a year ago.

“Our ball control and passing has definitely improved,” Bryan noted.

King scored just twice while starting as a freshman a year ago, but showed sufficient knack for the twine Friday.

“It was a very good game for Josh. He’s an outside midfielder who had some good shots from quite a distance,” Bryan said.

Brandon Palmer made one save for Mid Vermont, which hosts Long Trail on Wednesday.
