South Royalton — The Whitcomb-Rochester boys soccer team intended to start quickly in its season opener at rival South Royalton on Thursday. Five goals in the first half turned out to be plenty fast enough.

Zak Gillette scored twice and Ambrose Wigglesworth, Kevin Kingsbury and Max Stearns once apiece — all before the game was 28 minutes old — as the Mountaineers beat the Royals, 5-2.

“It’s the first time I can remember in five years of coaching this team that we’ve had four different players score in the same half,” Whitchester coach Corey Stearns said. “Our offense looks like it could be a lot more creative this year, moving the ball through the midfield. We generally played high pressure on both sides of the ball today. The defense did a good job keeping (the Royals) at bay.”

Stearns and Dan Labejsza had assists for the Mountaineers.

Nicholas Howe had a goal and an assist for South Royalton, which scored once in each half. Brais Figueroa had the other goal and Stephen Paige the other assist.

“We woke up a little bit in the second half, but couldn’t make up all the ground we’d lost,” Royals coach Alex Montano said.

Isaac Hodgdon made seven saves for the Mountaineers and Jason Perrin had eight for the Royals.

Both teams are off until Wednesday, Whitcomb-Rochester hosting Northfield in Bethel while the Royals visit Cabot.

Epping 6, Woodsville 3

Epping, n.h. — The unbeaten Blue Devils (3-0) handed the Engineers (3-1) their first loss.

Senior newcomer Antonio Houde had two goals and an assist, giving the Londonderry transfer 14 goals already on the young season.

Alex Enderson also scored for Woodsville, while Adam Cataldo and Garrett Olsen had asssists.

Cooper Davidson (six saves) and Jason Turner (two) split time in net for Woodsville, which crosses the Connecticut River to face Blue Mountain Union in the latter’s homecoming game Saturday.

Lebanon 3, Con-Val 0

Peterborough, n.h. — The Raiders knocked off the previously unbeaten Cougars.

Both teams are now 4-1.

Julian Stott scored first for Lebanon in the 13th minute, finishing a feed from Nate Gariepy to the lower left corner past standout ConVal keeper Noah Bell (10 saves).

In the second half, Noah Didehbani’s free kick from 60 yards out resulted in Lebanon’s second goal.

“We had several players in the landing area trying to flick Didehbani’s service toward goal,” Lebanon coach Rob Johnstone said in an email. “Even though we were not successful, the mass of bodies caused (Bell) to hesitate just enough for the ball to bounce over his head and under the crossbar.”

Luke Sandmann scored the clincher in the 78th minute, hammering one from 15 yards out after a pass behind the defense from Owen Johnstone.

Raiders goalie Davis Cole made a pair of outstanding stops amid five saves, Johnstone said, while center backs Cameron Magari and Carter Adams led a strong defensive effort.

Lebanon is back at home Tuesday against Kingswood.
