Claremont Man Pleads Not Guilty To Breaking Into Dusty’s Cafe

Claremont — A 35-year-old Claremont man pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to breaking into Dusty’s Cafe on Tuesday afternoon and stealing cash from the business.

Scott Berry was arraigned in Claremont District Court on a felony burglary charge and a misdemeanor count of criminal mischief in connection with the incident, Claremont Police said in a news release.

Police say Berry broke into the cafe through an adjoining business. He allegedly gained entry by breaking down a wall.

Once inside, he took an undisclosed amount of cash before leaving through the same wall he entered through, according to the release.

Security camera footage helped identified Berry as the suspect.

A judge set bail at $25,000 cash. Berry has a probable cause hearing for the felony charge scheduled for Sept. 8.

Dartmouth College Announces Contributions

Hanover — Dartmouth College announced on Wednesday that donors provided $319 million in gifts and commitments during the 2016 fiscal year, which ended in June.

The contributions were a 2.8 percent increase over what the college received last year, according to a Dartmouth news release.

Dartmouth said the donations are helping to create 10 interdisciplinary academic clusters aimed at addressing specific global challenges. The $150 million investment will also include donations from two previous years as well.

The college also is using $61 million to fund an expansion of the Thayer School of Engineering, and has raised $40.5 million of the $50 million needed for its expansion and renovation of the Hood Museum of Art. It also has received $25 million in “gifts and commitments to construct and endow” an indoor practice facility that several neighbors have opposed. The proposed facility currently is before the Hanover Planning Board.

No Injuries in I-91 Crash in Thetford

Thetford — Nobody was hurt when a tractor-trailer struck a fifth-wheel camper that was pulled over and waiting for road service on Wednesday on Interstate 91 southbound in Thetford, police said.

Thetford Police said in a Facebook post that the camper owners, who were awaiting a tire repair, were “sitting off in the grass watching it happen.”

The camper was heavily damaged.

Police encouraged drivers to pull into the left-hand lane to pass disabled vehicles.

“Even though the law doesn’t require you to do so for disabled cars, do it anyway,” they said in the post. “Save the hassle, possibly save a life.”
