West Canaan — Cameron Holmes had two goals to lead an explosive effort by the Mascoma High boys soccer team in a 6-0 home victory over Laconia on Tuesday.

Tucker Stenger added a goal and three assists for the Royals (1-0-1). Alex Schwarz had a goal and a pair of assists. Jacob Dow and James Disbrow also scored. Kyle Langlais added an assist.

Goalie Hunter Whyte had nine saves for Mascoma. The Royals started the season with a 3-3 tie against Berlin on Friday afternoon and now remain unbeaten in the early going. Mascoma visits Fall Mountain on Thursday, with kickoff at 4 p.m.

Hanover 2, Exeter 1

Exeter, n.h. — The Marauders rallied after Exeter scored five minutes into the action to pick up a quality road victory, their second in as many games.

Henry Kahl scored the equalizer for Hanover in the 25th minute, rocketing a left-footer into the back of the net from 25 yards out. Freshman Charlie Adams scored his second goal in as many games to put Hanover in front in the 16th minute of the second half. Adams’ goal came when he beat a defender deep in the left corner, drove toward the goal and scored from a tight angle.

Defenders Sam Pych and Adam Pikelny each had crucial tackles to stop Exeter scoring chances late in the game. Goalie Pat Logan anchored the backline with four saves. Hanover (2-0) visits Winnacunnet on Friday in search of its third straight road victory to start the season.

Sunapee 5, Newport 1

Newport — Underclassmen set the tone for the Lakers (2-0) in beating the Tigers.

Freshman Michael Mullen scored in the 19th minute with an assist to classmate Darren Hulton to put Sunapee in front. Newport’s T.J. Hubert scored an equalizer before Sunapee senior Hank Vincent scored in the final minute of the first half to put the visitors ahead.

Sophomore Lane Smith added a pair of goals in the second half. Carson Garland added a goal. Smith, Mullen, Nate Emery and Austin Leblanc each had assists. Keeper Will Palin had four saves.

Sunapee visits Concord Christian on Sept. 7.

Woodsville 8, Colebrook 1

Woodsville — Antonio Houde and Adam Cataldo each had three goals and the Engineers tallied six goals in the second half to pull away from Colebrook.

Garrett Olsen added a goal and two assists. Sam Pushee also scored. Houde added a pair of assists. Cataldo, Connor Maccini and Donny Bowman also had assists. Goalies Cooper Davidson and Jason Turner combined for six saves.

Woodsville (2-0) hosts Lin-Wood on Tuesday.

Stevens 1, Fall Mountain 0

Claremont — Noah Spaulding’s penalty kick goal in the first half proved to be all the Cardinals needed to overcome the Wildcats.

“It was a great, intense game as always between us,” Stevens coach Jason Stone said. “We had plenty of opportunities but the Fall Mountain goalie was amazing.”

Cardinals keeper Tanner Durkee had five saves. Stevens (1-1) visits Franklin on Friday.

John Stark 1, Lebanon 0

Weare, n.h. — Despite holding a 12-2 edge in corners, the Generals stole a victory to drop the Raiders to 1-1.

Lawson Murphy scored the game-winner for John Stark with four minutes left to play on a shot that glanced off a Lebanon defender and the left post on its way to the back of the net.

Graham Chickering hit the post for Lebanon on a shot in the first half; Carter Adams’ follow-up header was deflected away by Generals’ keeper Chase Patterson. The Raiders host Kearsarge on Thursday for their home opener.

Field Hockey

Lebanon 1, Merr. Valley 0 (OT)

Penacook, n.h. — One game, one thrilling overtime victory.

Maddie Hastings scored five minutes into extra time for the Raiders (1-0), capping a two-on-one drive by converting on a feed from Meredith Melendy.

Sophomore goalie Hope Brown made two saves, both of the spectacular variety, to keep the Pride scoreless. Coach Deb Beach praised the defensive work of Corinne Kennedy. Lebanon visits Derryfield on Thursday.

Stevens 5, Kearsarge 0

North Sutton, n.h. — Jenny Morey and Rebecca Moody each had two goals to lead the Cardinals to a season-opening victory.

Ashlee Brown also scored. Elyce Scott had three assists. Morey and Ryann Ryder also had assists. Goalie Tess Whitney had one save for the Cardinals, who play host to Bow on Friday.

Newfound 4, Mascoma 1

West Canaan — Julia Fox scored late but the Royals (0-1) couldn’t overcome a slow start against the Bears.

Justine Martin assisted on Fox’s goal. Mascoma hosts Newport on Friday.

Kennett 3, Hanover 1

Hanover — Diana Schwarz drew the Marauders (0-1) level 90 seconds into the second half, but the Eagles struck twice within six minutes to pull away.

Sophie Cardenali finished with six saves for Hanover, which is back at Merriman-Branch Field against Plymouth on Thursday.

Girls Soccer Sunapee 2, Newport 1

Newport — The Lakers (2-0) weren’t on their best form but held on to beat the Tigers (1-1).

Sunapee scored seven minutes into each half with Hannah Cooney putting the visitors in front early on an assist from Ellie Frederick. Jackie Balch added a goal in the second half with the assist to Cooney.

Newport answered back 15 seconds later on a goal by Hannah Stark, assisted by Haley McNamara.

Newport keeper Anna Pysz had 12 saves and Lakers counterpart Suzanne Rickard had six. Newport visits Conant on Friday and Sunapee hosts Concord Christian on Tuesday.

John Stark 6, Lebanon 0

Lebanon — The Raiders (0-2) couldn’t keep pace with the Generals in the Lebanon home opener.

John Stark outshot the hosts 19-1. Keeper Chloe Wadlinger had 12 saves for Lebanon, which travels to Kearsarge on Thursday.

Colebrook 4, Woodsville 0

Woodsville — The young and inexperienced Engineers weren’t able to string together any solid offensive attacks in dropping their second straight game to open the season.

Freshman Jasmine Smith had a strong game at sweeper according to coach Ann Loud. Lily Kinder moved up to the attack to help spark some offense and managed to apply pressure on the Colebrook defense. Woodsville hosts Lin-Wood on Tuesday.

Golf Hanover Tops Two

Hanover — The Marauders cruised to a 38-stroke victory on the front nine of the Hanover Country Club.

Phin Choukas, Jack Brendel and Peter Lukovits tied for the medal with three-over par rounds of 37. Finn Hackett added a 39 and Grant Morhun had 40. Hanover (4-1) visits Gofftstown on Thursday.

Team scores: Hanover 190, Kingswood 228, Trinity 247.

Women’s Hockey Schuler Remains With Canada

Calgary, Alberta — First-year Dartmouth head coach Laura Schuler will again serve as head coach of the Canadian national women’s hockey program this winter.

It will be Schuler’s second season as Team Canada head coach, one that will begin with the program’s weeklong fall festival camp on Sept. 11. The 2016-17 calendar includes the Four Nations Cup in Finland from Nov. 1-5 and the IIHF women’s world championships in Michigan from March 31-April 7.

Schuler begins her first season at the Big Green’s helm with an Oct. 16 exhibition game against McGill at Thompson Arena.
