Buffalo, n.y. — A 21-year-old Buffalo woman has sued Sabres forward Evander Kane, saying he seriously injured her in the hotel room where he lives.

Documents filed July 1 in Erie County State Supreme Court on behalf of Rachel Kuechle say Kane met her in a bar, invited her to what he said was a party and then attacked her, causing cuts and bleeding that required multiple surgeries. Without providing details of how she was injured, her lawyers said Kuechle suffered “serious emotional trauma” and “serious, permanent and painful personal injuries.”

Kane’s actions are described as “unwanted, unconsented to, violent and offensive in nature physical battery,” according to court papers.

No monetary damages were specified in the lawsuit. A message left for Kuechle’s lawyer wasn’t immediately returned.

Kane had been cleared in March of any criminal charges after authorities investigated the Dec. 27 encounter initially described as a possible sexual assault.

NFL FootballCowboys Backup QB Hurt

Oxnard, Calif. — Dallas quarterback Kellen Moore broke his right ankle in a training camp practice Tuesday, likely forcing the Cowboys to look outside the organization for an experienced backup.

The injury happened during one of the last plays of 11-on-11 work in the second full-pad practice of camp. Guard Jared Smith was pushed back by defensive lineman Lawrence Okoye and stepped on Moore’s ankle.

Without Moore, there isn’t a backup behind Tony Romo with any NFL experience. Dallas drafted former Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott in the fourth round this year, and undrafted free agent Jameill Showers is in his second year. Prescott and Showers have been sharing third-team work.

Cards Sign DB Mathieu

Glendale, Ariz. — The Arizona Cardinals and All-Pro defensive back Tyrann Mathieu have agreed to a five-year contract extension, a rich reward for a player once considered a high-risk draftee.

A person with knowledge of the agreement says the contract totals $62.5 million, with $40 million guaranteed. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the terms were not officially revealed.

College SportsWoman to Ask NCAATo Ban Violent Athletes

Indianapolis — A woman who says she was raped by college football players nearly 20 years ago is asking the NCAA to ban sexually violent athletes.

Brenda Tracy and her son will present a petition to the NCAA’s Board of Governors at its meeting today in Indianapolis. Current guidelines generally allow schools or conferences to hand down such punishments.

Tracy’s son, Darius, says he started the petition after hearing about multiple allegations involving Baylor football players. The petition contains more than 157,000 signatures.

The NCAA’s top committee has already met once with the family as it debates how to address sexual violence on campus.

Brenda Tracy says she was raped by four men, including Oregon State football players, in 1998.

The Associated Press generally doesn’t identify people who say they were sexually assaulted, but Tracy has spoken publicly to draw attention to her situation.

Report: Hayne back to National Rugby League with Gold Coast

GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) — Former San Francisco 49ers running back Jarryd Hayne is reported to be returning to the National Rugby League, signing a two-year contract with the Gold Coast Titans.

The Titans scheduled a media conference for Wednesday. Australian media reported the deal was worth 1.2 million Australian dollars ($914,000) a season.

In May, Hayne left the 49ers after one NFL season in an attempt to play for Fiji’s rugby sevens team at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. But Hayne wasn’t able to earn a place on the strong Fijian squad that is a gold medal threat at the games.

Since then, Hayne had been linked with a return to his former NRL team, the Parramatta Eels, and rugby union. Hayne left the Eels in 2014 to pursue his short-lived NFL career.
