Author Gives $300,000 To Star Island for Building Upgrades

Isles of Shoals, n.h. — Officials say New Hampshire’s Star Island in the Isles of Shoals is receiving a $300,000 gift that will help preserve two older buildings and help establish a fishermen exhibit.

The Portsmouth Herald reports the donation comes from Virginia author Lois Williams, who wrote Religion at the Isles of Shoals. The Williams family has been coming to the island since 1975.

The nonprofit Star Island Corporation has owned the 43-acre island since 1915.

Williams said the gift will help upgrade a cottage that houses the Celia Thaxter Museum and renovate the building housing Rutledge Marine Lab. It will also create a large wall display on the early history of the Isles of Shoals.

Star Island hosts conferences, family camps, and short-stay programs focused on topics including history, science and culture.

Beaches Set to Reopen After Great White Shark Sighting

Plymouth, Mass. — Two beaches are set to reopen after a great white shark was spotted off the coast of Plymouth.

The Plymouth harbormaster told The Boston Globe that Plymouth Long Beach and White Horse Beach were scheduled to reopen at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Both beaches were evacuated Saturday afternoon after a local lobsterman saw the shark about a half-mile off Manomet Point. No injuries were reported.

Harbormaster boats searched for the shark Saturday evening but the fish was not located.

The boats were not out searching Sunday morning because of foggy weather but were expected to resume the search before the beaches reopen.

Great whites have become common off the coast of Massachusetts in recent summers, attracted by the seals, their favorite meal. Sightings often prompt beach closings.
