Claremont — Canam Steel, a fabricator of enormous bridge girders on River Road, is inviting the public to an open house on Saturday, July 16, for an up-close look at the company’s production facility.

“A lot of people know there is a big building here but they don’t really know what we do,” said Canam’s human resources manager, Dana Moss.

“This is an opportunity to showcase to the public what we do. We are not just steel workers. We are building American’s infrastructure that millions of people travel on.”

The company is under contract to provide girders for the new Tappan Zee Bridge over the Hudson River in New York and the new Goethals Bridge connecting New Jersey with Staten Island, N.Y., over the Arthur Kill River.

Previously, Canam fabricated the girders for the Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth, N.H.

Moss said the half-hour tour will include an explanation of the machines the company uses and how the different bridge components are built.

Visitors also will be able to see the company’s “painting bay,” the largest on the East Coast, Moss said.

Production will be shut down for the day.

Canam bought the former Eastern Bridge about eight years ago and invested close to $20 million in the building that was originally built for Joy Manufacturing. The company employs 160.

While the day is not being billed as a job fair, Moss said, the company has a need for workers, including welders, and anyone interested is encouraged to attend to learn more about the work.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon.
