Miami — Dwyane Wade is leaving the Miami Heat after 13 seasons and going home to Chicago after agreeing to terms on a contract with the Bulls on Wednesday night, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because nothing can be finalized before Thursday, when the NBA’s offseason moratorium on player movement is lifted.

Wade met with the Heat on Wednesday in New York, as well as representatives from the Denver Nuggets and Milwaukee Bucks before finalizing his decision. It mirrors, in some respects, the decision Wade’s close friend LeBron James made when he left Miami two summers ago to go back to his northeast Ohio roots in Cleveland.

In James’ case, it was a return to the place where he spent his first seven pro seasons. In Wade’s case, it’s a totally new chapter and comes after three championships and 12 All-Star appearances in Miami. He was the face of the franchise, Miami’s leader in most major statistical categories. And now, the era ends.

Yahoo Sports first reported the agreement.

Cycling Belgian Wins 1st Mountain Stage

Le Lioran, France — Belgian rider Greg van Avermaet won the first mountain stage of the Tour de France with an audacious solo attack in the Massif Central on Wednesday and also claimed the overall leader’s yellow jersey.

The BMC rider was part of an early nine-man breakaway and he methodically whittled down the group before accelerating past fellow Belgian Thomas De Gendt with 10 miles to go on the penultimate climb of the day.

Defending champion Chris Froome and two-time runner-up Nairo Quintana finished in the main pack, while two-time winner Alberto Contador and 2014 champion Vincenzo Nibali fell out of contention.

The 31-year-old Van Avermaet also won a stage in last year’s Tour and is known as a specialist at single-day classics and short stage races, having won Paris-Tours in 2011 and the Tirreno-Adriatico this year.

At the finish, Van Avermaet pointed to his chest and BMC shirt then celebrated by using his left hand for two fist pumps.

Van Avermaet does not consider himself a threat for the overall title. He plans to support BMC captains Tejay van Garderen and Richie Porte in the Pyrenees and Alps.

The 134-mile fifth stage from Limoges to Le Lioran featured five climbs in a constant up-and-down finish, including the 5,213-foot Pas de Peyrol.

It was the first time that the Tour reached above 1,500 meters this early in the race since the leg-breaking start to the 1979 edition, which began with three stages in the Pyrenees over the first four days.

NHL Hockey Bourque Apologizes

Lawrence, Mass. — Former Boston Bruins star Ray Bourque apologized to his family, friends and fans for driving drunk last month.

Bourque apologized in a statement Wednesday after admitting in Lawrence District Court that prosecutors have enough evidence to convict him of driving under the influence when he rear-ended a minivan in Andover on June 24.

Bourque’s “admission to sufficient facts” plea will resolve the case without a guilty finding if he successfully completes a year of probation. A judge also suspended Bourque’s driver’s license for 45 days.

Police said Bourque had a blood-alcohol level of 0.249, three times the state’s legal limit to drive. In his statement, Bourque said he takes full responsibility for his actions.

Soccer Messi Given 21 Months

Madrid — Lionel Messi and his father were sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud by a Barcelona-based court on Wednesday, with both sentences likely to be suspended.

The court found the Barcelona star and his father, Jorge Horacio Messi, each guilty of three counts of defrauding tax authorities of$4.6 million.

In Spain, sentences of less than two years for first offences are usually suspended, meaning neither man would go to jail. That decision, however, rests with the court.

The court also fined Messi 2 million euros and his father 1.5 million euros.

New York City FC 1, Revolution 0

Foxborough, Mass. — Frank Lampard scored his third goal in four games to help New York City FC beat the New England Revolution in MLS.

New York City (8-5-6) has won four games in a row and sits atop the Eastern Conference. New England (5-6-7) lost its third straight.

Thomas McNamara ran down a chipped ball near the goal line and his cross redirected off Lampard’s leg in the 58th minute.

New England’s best chance for a goal came in the 30th minute when Teal Bunbury’s open header bounced over the crossbar.

College Football Ex-Players Want Paterno Statue Restored

State College, Pa. — More than 200 former Penn State football players are petitioning university leaders to return the bronze statue of Joe Paterno that stood outside the school’s football stadium.

The statue of the late football coach was removed in 2012. That was after his former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was convicted of child sexual abuse and an investigation accused Paterno and other ex-officials of covering up complaints about Sandusky.

The players sent a letter Tuesday to the board of trustees and Penn State President Eric Barron calling for the statue’s return. The players also want an apology to Paterno’s wife, Sue, and the restoration of the wall that stood behind the statue.

A university spokesman said there will be “a time and a place” to acknowledge Paterno’s legacy.
