The recent Kimball Union Academy graduate and University of Arizona commit is in the field for the women’s 400-meter freestyle and has three other potential events on her schedule. Cox’s specialty, the 200 free, is set for Tuesday.
The 18-year-old Upper Valley Aquatic Club competitor goes into today’s 400 seeded 13th in a field of more than 100 competitors with a qualifying time of 4 minutes, 8.69 seconds. Virginia’s Katie Ledecky is the runaway favorite in both that event (3:58.37) as well as Tuesday’s 200 (1:54.43), in which Cox is seeded 20th (1:59.28) out of nearly 120 swimmers who qualified for the trials.
Cox also qualified to compete in the 200 individual medley, which is also on Tuesday. Additionally, Cox is on the start list for the 800 free on Friday, but Dorsi Reynolds, Cox’s UVAC coach, indicated in a Sunday night email that she’ll scratch competing in that event.
The Olympic Trials run through Sunday.
