White River Junction — A Vermont state fire marshal this morning said Wednesday afternoon’s fire on Crystal Place started after a resident put his cigarette butt in a metal pail on the front porch. 

Fire Marshal Mike Bedard said he has ruled the fire accidental. There was some paper in the pail, he said.

Two firefighters were transported to the hospital following Wednesday evening’s fire for heat exhaustion and related injuries. They have since been released.
