East Thetford, Vt. — Ernest (Ernie) M. Silva, 89, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at his farm in East Thetford.

He was born in Oct. 15, 1926, in Cambridge, Mass. to parents, James E Silva and Astrid (Torp) Silva. He enlisted in the US Navy at 17 and served his country during World War II. He later graduated from Clarence White School of Photography in Maine. He then moved to New York City, worked as a commercial photographer and married Arlene Lill in 1953. He and his wife owned and operated Ernest Silva Studios for 30 years in NYC and lived in Lloyd Neck, N.Y. He retired in 1984 and moved to East Thetford, Vt.

In his free time, Ernie enjoyed spending time at his cottage on Cape Cod, diving and underwater photography, traveling, woodworking, tree farming, gardening, reading and cooking.

Ernie is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife of 63 years, Arlene (Lill) Silva of East Thetford; daughter, Leslie Silva and husband, Blair Weiss of Peterborough, N.H.; sons, Brian Silva and wife, Diana of Ithaca, N.Y., James Silva and significant other, Dale Fetterolf of Key Largo, Fla.; and grandchildren, Julie, Suzy, Michael, Caroline, Eric and Laura.

There will be no calling hours and a family celebration of Ernie’s life will be held this summer on the Bass River in Cape Cod, Mass.

The Hale Funeral Homes and Cremation care of Thetford Center, Vt. is in charge of arrangements.
