Washington — Major League Baseball said it is reviewing Washington Nationals slugger Bryce Harper’s confrontation with an umpire to decide whether he should be disciplined.

Harper was ejected by plate umpire Brian Knight while in the dugout during the ninth inning of Washington’s 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Monday night.

When someone is tossed from a game in the majors, he is required to leave the dugout.

Moments after Monday’s ejection, pinch hitter Clint Robinson hit a tiebreaking, game-ending home run, and Harper ran onto the field with his teammates to celebrate. Harper pointed toward Knight and cursed at the umpire.

After the game, Harper described what he said as “a couple choice words.” He did not speak to reporters in the clubhouse before Tuesday’s game.

Reds Catcher Has Surgery

Cincinnati — Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco had surgery Tuesday on his left shoulder, which was damaged worse than expected. He’ll have a six-month rehabilitation program.

Mesoraco started feeling pain in his nonthrowing shoulder the first week of the season. He played in only 16 games, batting .140 with one double and one RBI.

The 27-year-old catcher was an All-Star for the first time in 2014, when he hit 25 homers and drove in 80 runs. A sore hip limited him to 23 games last season and required surgery. He was the starting catcher on opening day.

Royals Prospect Suspended

New York — Kansas City Royals prospect Raul Mondesi was suspended for 50 games for testing positive for clenbuterol, a banned steroid.

The penalty was announced Tuesday against the 20-year-old infielder, who is on Kansas City’s 40-man roster, but had been optioned to Double-A.

Mondesi was the first player to make his big league debut in the World Series.

Angels Add Infielder

Washington — The Washington Nationals traded infielder Brendan Ryan to the Los Angeles Angels for cash considerations.

Ryan has been at Triple-A Syracuse in 2016 after signing with Washington in February.

The swap comes a day after the Angels said shortstop Andrelton Simmons needs surgery for a torn ligament in his left thumb.

Horse Racing Derby Ratings Slip

New York — There were high hopes that the popularity of horse racing would be energized a year after American Pharoah won the Triple Crown.

NBC’s ratings for televising the Kentucky Derby indicate it hasn’t happened yet.

The audience for Nyquist’s Derby victory Saturday dropped 3.1 percent from last year, when American Pharoah won the Derby to begin his Triple Crown run.

NBC announced Tuesday that the Derby averaged 15.5 million viewers with a 9.0 rating and 21 share. American Pharoah’s Derby drew an average of 16 million viewers and a 9.6/23, which was a 2 percent increase over California Chrome’s 2014 Derby win.
