New York — David Ortiz homered twice, passing Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski for second place on Boston’s career list, and Steven Wright pitched a three-hitter as the Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 5-1 on Sunday night.

Dustin Pedroia hit an early two-run homer and Xander Bogaerts also went deep for the Red Sox, who prevented a three-game sweep and won for the fourth time in six meetings with their longtime rivals this year.

In his farewell season, the 40-year-old Ortiz has five home runs against the Yankees since April 29.

Wright (3-3) walked one and struck out seven, breezing to his first complete game in 17 major league starts. He was two strikes from a shutout, too, when Brett Gardner homered with two outs in the ninth inning.

Ortiz connected for two long solo shots off a struggling Luis Severino (0-5).

Cubs 4, Nationals 3

Chicago — Chicago walked Washington star Bryce Harper a record-tying six times, then beat the Nationals when Javier Baez homered in the 13th inning for a four-game sweep.

The Cubs won their seventh in a row and improved the best record in the majors to 24-6. Washington lost its fourth straight.

Harper matched the major league record for walks in a game, last done by Jeff Bagwell in 1999, and walked 13 times in the series. Harper was hit by a pitch the other time he came to the plate.

Dodgers 4, Blue Jays 2

Toronto — Chase Utley sparked a go-ahead, eight-inning rally with a leadoff walk against Drew Storen (0-2), Yasmani Grandal hit a tying sacrifice fly off Roberto Osuna and Howie Kendrick followed with a go-ahead single.

Joc Pederson connected for his sixth homer as Los Angeles took two of three.

Chris Hatcher (3-3) won despite giving up a seventh-inning single to Kevin Pillar that put Toronto ahead 2-1. Kenley Jansen got three outs for his major league-leading 11th save.

Indians 5, Royals 4

Cleveland — Josh Tomlin (5-0) allowed four runs and seven hits in six-plus innings and became the first Cleveland pitcher to win his first five outings since Justin Masterson in 2011. Tomlin is 12-0 in 13 starts following a loss since the beginning of last season.

Carlos Santana and Mike Napoli homered off Edinson Volquez (3-3) as the Indians took two of three from the defending World Series champions, and Cody Allen finished for his eighth save.

Rangers 8, Tigers 3

Detroit — Bobby Wilson broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth with a grand slam against the team that just traded him, helping Texas complete a three-game sweep.

After being shut out for seven innings by Justin Verlander, the Rangers broke through against relievers Justin Wilson and Mark Lowe (1-1) for seven runs in the eighth.

Wilson didn’t hit any home runs for the Tigers before they sent him to Texas on Tuesday. His first shot of the season sent Detroit to its sixth straight loss.

Phillies 6, Marlins 5

Miami — Tyler Goeddel tied the score 5-5 with a double against David Phelps (2-2) in the eighth, his first big league extra-base hit, and scored on a hit by Andres Blanco double

Philadelphia’s Aaron Nola allowed three runs in six innings, and his scoreless streak ended at 23 innings. Hector Neris (1-1) pitched 1 scoreless innings, and Jeanmar Gomez pitched around a two-out single in the ninth for his 11th save.

Orioles 11, Athletics 3

Baltimore — Manny Machado hit two of Baltimore’s season-high six homers, including a grand slam, and had a career-high six RBIs.

Machado connected with a man on in the first inning and added his third career slam in the eighth.

Machado, Pedro Alvarez, Jonathan Schoop and Mark Trumbo homered off Kendall Graveman (1-4). Joey Rickard added a solo shot off Ryan Dull before Machado capped the fence-clearing barrage against J.B. Wendelken, making his major league debut.

White Sox 3, Twins 1

Chicago — Jose Quintana (5-1) allowed six hits in seven innings, lowering his ERA to 1.38.

David Robertson pitched a hitless ninth for his 10th save in 11 tries as the White Sox (22-10) completed a three-game sweep and moved 12 games above .500 for the first time since September 2012.

Austin Jackson hit a go-ahead double in the fifth off Tyler Duffey, who struck out four batters in the seventh.

Diamondbacks 5, Braves 3

Atlanta — Chris Herrmann’s second homer of the game, a two-run drive off Jim Johnson with two outs in the 11th inning, lifted Arizona to a three-game sweep.

Herrmann hit a seventh-inning homer off Mike Foltynewicz, then connected off Johnson (0-4) for his first multihomer game in the major leagues.

Astros 5, Mariners 1

Houston — Rookie Tyler White doubled twice and drove in a run to back Collin McHugh (4-3), who allowed one run and five hits in seven innings to win his third straight start.

Jose Altuve had two hits and tied a career-high with three stolen bases on a day the Astros swiped five.

Pirates 10, Cardinals 5

St. Louis — Gregory Polanco hit a three-run homer and John Jaso added a two-run drive.

Gerrit Cole (3-3) gave up two runs and six hits in six innings, and Mark Melancon got his ninth save when Yadier Molina grounded into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded.

Brewers 5, Reds 4

Cincinnati — Jonathan Lucroy greeted Ross Ohlendorf (3-3) with a tiebreaking home run leading off the eighth inning, then caught Billy Hamilton stealing for the final out — a call upheld in a video review.

Milwaukee overcame a 4-1 deficit; on Saturday, the Brewers won 13-7 in 10 innings after trailing 4-0 and 6-2.

Mets 4, Padres 3

San Diego — Matt Harvey (4-3) struck out a season-high 10 in six innings, Yoenis Cespedes homered off Andrew Cashner (2-3) and New York escaped a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the eighth to salvage a four-game split.

The Mets moved into sole possession of first place in the NL East for the first time this season. They trailed Washington by five games in mid-April.

Rays 3, Angels 1

Anaheim, Calif. — Matt Andriese (1-0) pitched seven innings of four-hit ball to win his season debut, Brad Miller hit a two-run homer and Tampa Bay completed a three-game sweep.

Curt Casali also homered as the Rays (15-14) won four straight games and moved above .500, accomplishing both for the first time since August. Alex Colome pitched the ninth for his ninth save.

Rockies 2, Giants 0

San Francisco — Nolan Arenado had three hits, and Eddie Butler (1-1) gave up four hits in six innings for his first win since being promoted from the minors.

Gerardo Parra singled in a run and made a diving catch, helping the Rockies salvage a four-game split. Rookie Trevor Story doubled and scored.

Arenado, the majors’ leading home run hitter, hit a run-scoring triple off the brick wall in right-center in his first at-bat, singled in the third and doubled in the eighth.

Jeff Samardzija (4-2) gave up two runs and eight hits in 7 2/3 innings, striking out nine.
