Carson, Calif. — Robbie Keane returned from knee surgery to score two goals, Gyasi Zardes had two assists and the Los Angeles Galaxy beat the New England Revolution, 4-2, on Sunday.

Los Angeles (5-1-3) extended its undefeated streak to seven games. New England (1-3-7) pushed its winless stretch to six games.

The Galaxy went up, 1-0, after Zardes’ cross found a wide-open Keane at the far post for an easy tap in. The duo made it 3-0 in the first minute of first-half stoppage time. Once again, Zardes used individual skill to draw defenders and found Keane freed up in front of goal.

Giovani dos Santos scored Los Angeles’ second goal in the 24th minute on a volley from distance.

New England rallied in the second half. Kelyn Rowe’s left-footed shot from outside the 18-yard box put the Revolution on the board in the 67th minute. Three minutes later, Juan Agudelo turned on a shot in front of goal to make it 3-2.

Los Angeles iced it when Steven Gerrard finished off a counterattack in the 93rd minute.

Barcelona Solidifies Lead in Spain

Madrid — Barcelona routed city rival Espanyol, 5-0, to increase its lead in the Spanish league going into this weekend’s final round of matches, when another victory will secure its second consecutive title.

Luis Suarez scored twice, with Lionel Messi, Neymar and Rafinha adding one goal each at the Camp Nou to give Barcelona a one-point lead over Real Madrid, which defeated Valencia, 3-2, with two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and one by Karim Benzema.

Atletico Madrid, which was trailing Barcelona for most of the tournament, dropped out of contention after a surprising 2-1 loss to already relegated Levante.

Man City in Slow Fade

Manchester, England — Manuel Pellegrini’s long goodbye at Manchester City is turning sour.

At the end of a week in which the team surrendered meekly in the Champions League semifinals, City was held 2-2 by Arsenal in the English Premier League to throw into doubt its return to Europe’s elite competition next season.

A top-four finish is no longer in City’s hands with one week left in the season.

Despite losing 2-1 at home to Southampton, Tottenham is assured of a top-three finish and therefore automatic qualification to the Champions League group stage.

In Sunday’s other game, Liverpool beat Watford 2-0 through goals by Joe Allen and Roberto Firmino to stay in eighth place, but the Premier League isn’t the team’s priority for the rest of the season.

Liverpool plays Sevilla in the Europa League final on May 18 and manager Juergen Klopp likely will continue to rotate his lineups for the Reds’ remaining two league games.

After taking charge of his final home game as City manager, Pellegrini took to the microphone soon after the final whistle to say a final “thank you” to the club’s fans. City’s players stood in the center circle, mostly with folded arms, to watch highlights of Pellegrini’s tenure on the big screens.

Yet, only a few thousand fans stayed back after the game to bid Pellegrini farewell. The Chilean coach has won one Premier League title, the League Cup two times and guided City to the Champions League semifinals — the furthest the club has ever progressed in the competition.

But his reign is ending in limp fashion. City barely posed a threat in bowing out to Real Madrid on Wednesday and the possibility of now losing its top-four place is, in Pellegrini’s words, a “disaster.”

Sergio Aguero’s eighth-minute opener was canceled out two minutes later by Olivier Giroud’s header from a corner, in a riveting start to the match.

Kevin De Bruyne put City back in front with a low shot from the edge of the area in the 51st, before Sanchez played a one-two with Giroud and beat Hart with a low finish from just outside the penalty area.

“It is in our hands,” Wenger said of Champions League qualification. “Our character has been questioned a few times this season and we gave the right response on the pitch.”

For Pellegrini and City, much now hinges on Man United’s game at West Ham on Tuesday. Win that, and United can finish the job by beating out-of-form Bournemouth at home on the final day. City finishes the season away to Swansea.
