West Fairlee Center, Vt. — Doris Olga (Jareckie) Honig, 95, died at the Health Alliance Hospital at Kingston, N.Y., on Friday, April 22, 2016.

She was born April 27, 1920, in Madison, N.J., daughter of Eugene Albert and Doris (Brittin) Jareckie. Doris Honig’s father, a graduate of Columbia University’s School of Engineering, was first employed by the Francisco Sugar Company, Camaguey, Cuba; later by The Celluloid Corporation; and finally from 1939 to 1955 by the McKiernan-Terry Corporation, Dover, N.J.

Mrs. Honig attended Madison Academy and Madison High School. She studied English at the University of Vermont and transferred to Simmons College, Boston, Mass., where she earned her bachelor’s degree in library science in 1942.

She first worked in book sales at Barnes & Noble in New York City. After her marriage to Richard E. Honig in 1943, Doris joined the Widener Library staff at Harvard University. She pursued a lengthy career, working as children’s librarian at the Princeton (N.J.) Public Library, the Feldberg Business and Engineering Library, Tuck School of Businessat Dartmouth College, and rounded out her career as head librarian at the Bradford (Vt.) Public Library.

Mrs. Honig, who had had a family connection since childhood to Middlebrook Valley in West Fairlee, moved to the Valley in 1975 to live in the Jareckie family home. She became active in West Fairlee town affairs. She served as an election worker at the polls and as justice of the peace in recent years. She was an active member in the West Fairlee Center Community Club and helped establish the recycling program in West Fairlee and neighboring towns. Doris was a member of the Society of Friends in Hanover, N.H., and the West Fairlee Center Church.

She was predeceased by a brother, David Spelman Jareckie. Doris is survived by two children, Kaete Brittin Shaw of High Falls, N.Y., and Daniel M. Honig and wife Norma of Glen Mills, Pa.; a brother, Stephen B. Jareckie and wife, Gretchen of Holden, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Grace Jareckie of Bennington, Vt.; two grandchildren, Christian and Alexia; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
