Woodsville — An early four-run deficit proved to be nothing the Woodsville High baseball team couldn’t overcome. The Engineers rallied for nine runs in a three-inning span and held on to beat visiting Profile 9-7 on Friday afternoon at Woodsville Community Field.

Woodsville trailed 4-0 as it came to bat in the bottom of the second inning and then answered with two runs in that frame followed by three in the third and four in the fourth to take a 9-4 lead.

Mike Dennis was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three stolen bases to spark the Engineers’ attack. Eric Thornton reached base four times on three hits and a hit-by-pitch, drove in two and scored two. Ty Brown and Jaret Bemis were each 2-for-4 with a run scored. Woodsville has won two straight to improve to 2-1.

“We worked out of that slump you’re going to run into in the first game,” Woodsville coach Brent Cox said. “We keep battling and putting the ball in play. We only struck out twice today. That’s our game, to put the ball in play and make them get us out.”

Thornton pitched the first 4 innings for the Engineers, striking out three. Jordan Clark struck out six in 2 innings of relief to close the door on the Patriots.

Woodsville visits Moultonborough on Monday afternoon.

South Royalton 11Whitcomb-Rochester 1

South Royalton — Junior starter Josh Scoskie struck out 10 in four innings of work to lead the Royals to a season-opening victory over the Mountaineers.

Scoskie didn’t allow a hit and walked just one. Justin Brock pitched three innings in relief and struck out two.

“As the game went on, (Scoskie) was getting more and more comfortable. The ball was hitting the corners, and he was getting smoother out there,” Royals coach Michael Ballou said.

Dominick Small drove in three and was 2-for-4 to lead SoRo at the plate. Stephen Paige added two hits and two RBIs. Dalton McDougall singled and had two RBIs. Scoskie helped his cause with two hits and drove in one.

The Royals host Thetford today.

John Stark 3, Lebanon 0

Weare, n.h. — The young Raiders held tight with a deep and experienced Generals team despite a strong varsity debut by sophomore starting pitcher Derrick Griffin.

Griffin pitched the first five innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits while striking out five and walking just one. Nate Perkins pitched an inning of relief. The Raiders managed just four hits, including a triple by freshman Andrew Hadlock and a single by Hunter Boutin, the first varsity hit for each. Caleb Broughton and Nate Gariepy also had singles.

“We hung in there, settled in pretty good,” Lebanon coach Doug Ashey said. “We lost seven seniors from last year, so it’s a pretty good first outing. We’ve got to get better every day. But there’s reason for optimism, I’ll say that.”

The Raiders (0-1) host Hollis-Brookline on Monday afternoon.

Sunapee 7, Derryfield 0

Manchester — Will Austin tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Lakers, striking out six.

Austin also was 2-for-2 and scored two runs. Mike Platt was 2-for-4. Hank Vincent and Keir Lucas each had a hit and two RBIs. The Sunapee defense was also on its game, turning two double plays.

The Lakers (1-1) are back in action at Epping on Monday.

Laconia 16, Mascoma 6

West Canaan — The Royals were undone by defensive miscues in the second inning, surrendering nine runs in the frame to fall into too deep a hole to escape.

Ethan Brueckner was 3-for-3 with a run scored and also reached base on a walk. Anthony Sperry added two hits and scored twice.

Mascoma (0-2) hosts Kearsarge today.

Softball Whitcomb-Rochester 14 South Royalton 6

South Royalton — The Mountaineers took advantage of several South Royalton errors with seven runs in the fourth inning to pull in front for good.

Samantha Barcomb had a pair of doubles and scored four runs for Whitchester. Lindsey LaPerle was 4-for-4 with a double and scored once. Laura Vaillancourt pitched a complete game for the victory. The Mountaineers led 12-3 after their big fourth-inning effort and never looked back.

Mara Southworth and Rachel Moore each had RBI singles for SoRo. Paige Ballentine pitched the first three innings before leaving after getting injured on a play at the plate. Moore tossed three innings of relief.

South Royalton hosts Thetford today.

Sunapee 8, Derryfield 3

Manchester — Clutch two-out hitting helped the Lakers over the host Cougars, improving Sunapee to 2-0 on the young season.

Katie Frederick started a two-out rally in the first inning with a triple. Lexie Hamilton followed with an RBI single. After Faith Larpenter singled, Jessica Parsons drove in two with an RBI single of her own to give Sunapee an early 3-0 lead. With the Lakers nursing a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning, Meagan Curry delivered a two-run single with two outs to give the visitors breathing room.

Frederick struck out eight in her three innings of work in the circle. Larpenter pitched the last four innings, striking out six. Frederick finished 3-for-4 at the plate. Rachel Malanga was 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI. Hamilton and Larpenter each finished with two hits and two runs scored. Parsons was 2-for-3.

Sunapee visits Epping on Monday.

Woodsville 8, Profile 2

Woodsville — Slugging catcher Nikita Duling had her second home run in as many games to lead the Engineers (2-1) over the Patriots.

Duling’s blast was a solo shot in the fourth inning. She added a two-run double in the second and finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored. Tori Clough was 2-for-4.

Alyssa Prest went all seven innings in the circle, striking out nine, walking four and surrendering just three hits. Woodsville visits Moultonborough on Monday.

Weare, n.h. — The Raiders dropped their season opener and look ahead to hosting Hollis-Brookline on Monday.

Claremont — The host Cardinals dropped their debut for new coach Melissa Nichols and will look for better luck in a trip to Newfound on Thursday.

Boys Lacrosse Hanover 9Thornton (Maine) 5

Saco, Maine — Four players had a pair of goals to lead the Marauders to their first win of the season.

Reed Winter and Brian Seltzer each had two goals and one assist. Graham Penfield and Jake Acker also added pairs of goals. Kaleb Hunt scored once. George Geraghty added three assists.

Hanover started fast, leading 3-0 in the early going and 5-1 at halftime before withstanding a three-goal rally by Thornton just after the break. Goalie Zander Lingelbach-Pierce had 11 saves.

The Marauders stay in the Pine Tree State today, visiting Yarmouth.

Girls Lacrosse Hanover 20, Pembroke 0

Hanover — Molly Seibel and Johanna Copeland each had four goals to lead the Marauders to a season-opening blowout victory over the Spartans.

Jasmine Lou added three goals and Perrin Milliken had a pair of scores. Sonthaya Lacy, Cate Wagner, Amelia Lubrano and Maddie Lyons each had a goal and an an assist. Annika Cole, Izzy Sangha and Hailey Fahey also scored. Copeland added a pair of assists to finish with six points.

The goals for Milliken, Sangha, Wagner, Fahey and Lou were the first in their varsity careers. Goalie Katelyn Hurd had five saves, and coach Chris Seibel praised the defensive effort of Georgina Stern. Hanover hosts Winnacunnet today.

Boys Tennis Bedford 9, Hanover 0

Bedford, n.h. — The defending New Hampshire Division I champion Bulldogs swept the Marauders (3-1).

Hanover played shorthanded because of school vacation absences. “We’re looking forward to playing them in the playoffs after we have had more time to develop,” Marauders coach Jarrod Shaheen said.

Hanover hosts Manchester Central on Monday.

Girls Tennis Kearsarge 5, Stevens 4

North Sutton, n.h. — The Cardinals dropped to 0-3 in a narrow road loss. Stevens’ three-game road trip continues Monday at Bow.

Men’s Tennis Dartmouth 6, Brown 1

Hanover — Seniors Dovydas Sakinis and Brendan Tannenbaum combined for three points in the final matches at the Boss Tennis Center of their careers to lead Dartmouth over the Bears. Dartmouth improved to 16-8 overall, 4-1 in the Ivy League.

Tannenbaum and George Wall won, 6-0, at No. 1 doubles. Max Schmidt and Roko Glasnovic won, 6-1, at No. 2, and Sakinis and Max Fliegner won, 4-3, in an unfinished match at No. 3 doubles.

Sakinis added a 7-6, 6-1 victory at the top singles match. Ciro Riccardi (6-3, 6-1), Fliegner (7-6, 6-1), Wall (6-2, 6-2) and Eddie Grabill (6-1, 6-4) also won in singles.

“Our doubles set a good tone again today,” Big Green coach Chris Drake said. “We jumped out to early leads on all three courts and were able to finish a couple of the sets rather quickly. I was pleased that in so many cases, we played our best tennis in the second sets to close out matches.”

Dartmouth visits Yale on Sunday.

Women’s Tennis Dartmouth 5, Brown 2

Providence, r.i. — The Big Green earned the edge in both doubles and singles play to beat the Bears and improve to 11-6 overall, 2-3 in the Ivy League.

Katherine Yau and Julia Schroeder partnered for a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. Jacqueline Crawford and Lexxi Kiven won, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles to give Dartmouth the early edge.

Yau (6-2, 6-2) and Crawford (4-6, 6-2, 6-0) also picked up victories in singles play. Taylor Ng won, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1 singles, and Kristina Mathis won in three sets at No. 3 singles.

Dartmouth hosts Yale on Sunday.

College Volleyball Doron Fills Coaching Vacancy

Hanover — Dartmouth College welcomed Gilad Doron to town on Friday as the Big Green’s new women’s volleyball coach.

Doron joins the Big Green after nine season at the University of San Francisco, where — in addition to co-coaching the school’s beach volleyball team — he amassed a 131-130 record, including 60 victories against West Coast Conference foes.

He also was head coach at Villanova for three years, was an assistant at Temple for four and also coached with a professional club in his native Israel.

Doron’s playing background includes 10 years with the Israeli national team, playing on a squad that finished fourth at the World University Games in Japan in 1995. Doron is a 2000 Temple graduate.

He takes over for Erin Lindsey, who stepped down as head coach earlier this year after five seasons.
