The Big Green used four pitchers on a combined four-hitter and made use of some daring late-game baserunning for a 2-1 win over Holy Cross. Dartmouth (6-16) surrendered the game’s first run and answered with solo scores in the sixth and seventh innings to get the decision and snap a four-game losing streak.
The Big Green used singles from seniors Nick Ruppert and Adam Gauthier to get runners on first and second with one away in the seventh. The Crusaders (11-19) brought in former Hanover High ace Joe Cravero for relief. Ruppert and Gauthier took off on a double steal on Cravero’s second pitch, the throw to third base sailed high and Ruppert scored for a 2-1 lead the hosts would hold the rest of the day.
Clay Chatham, Sam Fichthorn, Chris Burkholder and Patrick Peterson split the mount duties for Dartmouth, no pitcher throwing more than three innings or 40 pitches. Burkholder got the win, and Peterson notched his first save of the year.
The Big Green scratched seven hits off three Holy Cross hurlers. Right fielder Mike Brown accounted for two of them, while Thomas Roulis contributed Dartmouth’s sole RBI.
Reliever Danny Barlok too the loss for the Crusaders. Cravero worked the final 1 innings for Holy Cross, facing the minimum of five batters.
Dartmouth hosts Penn in an Ivy League doubleheader on Saturday, during which time the program will celebrate its 150th anniversary with appearances from a number of former Big Green players.
