Police Identify N.Y. Man In Fatal I-89 Crash

Enfield — A 36-year-old New York man has been identified as the victim in a fiery crash along southbound Interstate 89 in Enfield early last month.

Edward Brown of Central Islip, on Long Island, was the registered owner and driver of the vehicle that crashed into the interstate median and caught fire around 4:10 p.m. on March 1, according to a news release Saturday from New Hampshire State Police.

Emergency responders were unable to rescue Brown from the burning wreckage. The accident occurred near Exit 16 and the Whaleback ski area.

The accident remains under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call Trooper Janell Smith at 603-223-4381.

Claremont Zoning Board Postpones Senior Housing Hearing

Claremont — The Zoning Board of Adjustment has postponed Monday’s hearing on an application for a zoning variance filed by Wayne and Jean McCutcheon for 492 Washington St.

The McCutcheons are asking the ZBA to reduce the required area for a residential unit from three-quarters of an acre to a quarter of acre in anticipation of building about 70 senior housing units on 18 acres.

The planning office said last week that one abutter had not been notified and therefore the hearing was postponed, though it is not clear when the variance application will be heard.

Vermont Cat Shelter Needs to Find Homes For Dozens of Cats

Chester, Vt. — A Vermont shelter for cats is being evicted by its longtime landlord and needs to find homes for dozens of felines.

Webster’s House animal shelter in Chester is also being investigated for a recent animal cruelty complaint, but shelter officials say its closing is related solely to the eviction.

The shelter must close its doors by July 1.

Shelter manager Mary Donaldson said the shelter currently is doing health checks on its 39 cats, under an agreement with the Chester Police Department. The other option, she said, was closing immediately.

The shelter has existed under several different names since 2000 and is registered with the state, officials said.
