Film Notes: Lyme Bear Expert Helps Reintroduce Pandas to the Wild

The 33 pound cat was shot in Cavendish, Vt., and Mayo stopped to show his brother before selling it to a taxidermist on the second-to-last day of bobcat season. "This is a cat that I've probably ran before and never got him," said Mayo, who gets a license to hunt bobcat in Vermont because New Hampshire closed its season on the animals in the early 1980s. A proposal by New Hampshire Fish and Game to hold an annual lottery for 50 bobcat hunting permits was withdrawn in the spring of 2016 due to objections from legislators. Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts permit bobcat hunting, and in Vermont, hunters must turn over the carcass of the animal to Fish and Wildlife biologists for study after it has been skinned. One Last Catch

Dick Brousseau, of Hartland, Vt., picks up a trap on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, on land near Town Farm Hill Road in Hartland. Brousseau said he sets his traps to catch coyotes and fisher cats for their hide. "This is a kill trap for the fisher cats," he said to distinguish them from the traps he uses for coyotes.
