Each year, the Upper Valley is home to many Halloween costume contests for kids and adults alike.
New this year is a painted gourd and pumpkin contest for children and young adults, which will take place from 3-6 p.m. Wednesday at the last Hanover Farmers Market of the season.
“We just thought it would be a fun event. Family-friendly,” said Tracy Hutchins, director of the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce, which is sponsoring the contest. “It’s just a fun little way to encourage interaction and get kids involved with the farmers market. It helps promote healthy eating and shopping locally.”
Participants can bring already-decorated pumpkin or gourd to the farmers market before 5:30 p.m., or purchase one and decorate it there. A winner from each of three age categories will receive two tickets to the Nugget Theater. Judging by the vendors takes place at 5:30 p.m., and entrants do not need to be present to win.
The age categories are children under 10, children 11-16 and young adults 17-21. Parents can help young children and participants can also work together as a duo.
“You can paint them, you can put stickers on them, you can put funny faces on them, you can carve them,” Hutchins said. “We’re leaving everything intentionally broad.”
