Hanover — Apparently fifth place wasn’t so bad after all.

About 24 hours after claiming fifth in the finals of the women’s 5,000-meter run at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials, Dartmouth graduate Abbey D’Agostino found herself making plans for her first Olympic Games. With two competitors ahead of her dropping out of the event for Rio de Janeiro next month, D’Agostino moved up to the third slot on the team in the 5K and was officially added to the Olympic roster by USA Track and Field late Monday.

The 2014 Dartmouth graduate and the most-decorated athlete in Ivy League history, D’Agostino will race in the women’s 5K in Brazil on Aug. 16, with competition starting at 8:30 a.m.

D’Agostino, visibly straining in the final’s last laps, recorded a time of 15 minutes, 14.04 seconds to finish fifth in Sunday’s race at the University of Oregon. The top three times normally qualify for the Olympics, but two women who placed above D’Agostino — winner Molly Huddle and fourth-place Emily Infeld — confirmed in the hours afterward that they’d give up their 5,000-meter slots to concentrate on the 10K, for which both had qualified earlier in the meet.

D’Agostino, a Topsfield, Mass., native, won seven national titles in her four Dartmouth years. Four of them came in the 5,000, two each in the indoor and outdoor campaigns.

She joins two other former Big Green track and field stars, Sean Furey (men’s javelin, U.S.) and Lexi Pappas (women’s 10K, Greece), who will compete in Rio next month.

Golf Choukas Brothers Paired at N.H. Am

Laconia, n.h. — Oh, brother: Hanover Country Club’s Nate and Phin Choukas drew each other as first-round match play opponents at the New Hampshire Golf Association amateur championship after making the cut through two rounds of stroke play at Laconia Country Club.

The brothers joined fellow Hanover CC golfer Nick MacDonald in matches after all three shot 8-over-par 152 through the tournament’s first two days. While MacDonald (75-77), who won the state am at Eastman in 2010 and was runner-up a year later at Nashua Country Club, gets a 10:20 a.m. match with Manchester’s Patrick McGinley today, the brothers Choukas have a 9:16 a.m. showdown for supremacy in the household.

Phin Choukas (74-78), who will be a junior at Hanover High in the fall, reached the state am quarterfinals at Mount Washington Country Club last summer. Nate Choukas (74-78) will be a junior on the Trinity College men’s golf team in the fall.

Carter Country Club’s Andy Hunnewell came within a playoff of joining match play. He and four others landed on the cut line of 13-over 157, but Stonebridge’s Joshua Chamberlain survived to claim the final match-play slot.

Manchester’s Ryan Tombs won the individual medal, scorching Laconia to the tune of a 7-under 65 on Tuesday and a two-round tally of 9-under 135. Defending champion Connor Greenleaf, of Windham Country Club, shot even-par 144 to advance.

Winners today face two-match days on Thursday and Friday before Saturday’s 36-hole championship match.
