The Write Stuff

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is inviting Vermont high school students to write essays for his annual State of the Union contest.

Wednesday is the deadline to enter the contest, in which the writers are asked to describe, in 250 to 500 words, the problems they believe are the most pressing facing the United States and how they would go about solving them. To learn more, visit sanders.senate.gov, call 800-339-9834 or email katarina_lisaius@sanders.senate.gov.

The Congressional Record will archive the essays of the finalists. In 2018, Woodstock Union High School student Maggie Parker placed first among 585 contributors with her essay on the importance of protecting the rights of LGBTQ citizens.

Home Schooling

The Upper Valley Classical Community is inviting parents who home school their children to two events in January, showcasing the communityโ€™s weekly, Christianity-oriented Classical Conversations classes.

The introductions begin on Jan. 16 at 3 p.m., with an informational meeting at Valley Bible Church in White River Junction.

The following Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the church, Classical Conversations will host an open house where families can visit the weekly classes. The lessons, presentations and scientific experiments at those classes are aimed, according to the national organizationโ€™s website, at โ€œteaching parents and students the classical tools of learning so that they can discover Godโ€™s created order and beauty and โ€” as a resultโ€” enable others to do the same.โ€

To learn more about the gatherings, reach out to Linda Armstrong by emailing armstrong_linda@yahoo.com or calling 907-232-8839. For more information about the program, visit classicalconversations.com.
