In Vermont and New Hampshire, what’s taught — or not — in health classes’ sexuality units is determined by state law and choice by local school districts.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, New Hampshire has few state regulations about sex ed. In fact, it’s not mandatory, although HIV education must be taught. Parents are able to opt out.

In Vermont, age-appropriate sex-ed (including HIV education) is mandatory, but there is no requirement that the information provided be medically accurate. The state uses the federal National Health Education Standards, issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but Tom Aloisi, adolescent health program manager in the Vermont Sexual Health and Education Program, part of the Agency of Education, said that the guidelines are “quite old.” New standards are expected to be released this year.
