Bluffton, S.C. — Jonathan Milne, age 74, of Bluffton, and formerly of Barrington, N.H., died peacefullyMonday, October 23, 2017, at the home of a friend surrounded by family and loved ones following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Hanover, N.H., on May 20, 1943, the son of Dr. John and Jean (McDuff) Milne.

Jon was the oldest of four boys (Jonathan, Jeffrey, Jared and Joel), an avid hockey player, and a graduate of Holderness School and the University of New Hampshire. Jon served honorably with the United States Marine Corps and was discharged in 1968. After returning from service he founded Milne Enterprises, a petroleum hauling company that operated throughout northern New England, and remained active in the transportation industry throughout his life.

He moved from New Hampshire to Bluffton in 2013. Jon was a loyal and active friend of Bill W. for more than 28 years. Known affectionately as “Guru” or “Yoda” by many in the recovery community, he helped many individuals in their struggles to recover from addiction. Jon became a beloved fixture at recovery meetings throughout the Lowcountry and a close friend to those he mentored. An infectious and warm smile was his trademark.

Jon is survived by his daughters, Heidi Milne and her husband, Michael Lariviere of Wellesley Hills, Mass., Tamara Zaichkowsky and her husband, Justin, of Cambridge, Mass., son Todd Milne and son, Aaron Milne and his wife Kathryn, of Merrimack, N.H.; and five grandchildren, Evan and Brandon Lariviere; Talia and Greyson Zaichkowsky; and Molly Milne.

A memorial service will be held next spring in Bluffton. At Jon’s request, memorial contributions should be made to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, PO 3827, Bluffton, SC 29910, or to the charity of your choice.
