THETFORD — Two extra periods just weren’t enough Wednesday afternoon, as the Thetford Academy boys soccer team played to a 3-3 tie with visiting Lakes Region in the season opener for both squads.
Riley Burkins opened the scoring for the Panthers two minutes into the match on a pass from Kobe Pierson. Burkins gave Thetford (1-0) a 2-0 lead in the 15th minute, this time thanks to a Lucas Gilman assist.
But the Rangers scored two goals late in the first half to tie the game. Gordon Reo regained Thetford’s lead in the 62nd minute, with Burkins tallying the assist. The lead was short-lived, however, as Lakes Region tied the game a minute later.
Goalkeeper Ryen Wolf made 19 saves for the Panthers, who host Randolph on Saturday.
BRADFORD, Vt. — Danville broke the scoreless tie with 16 minutes left to play and then held off a handful of late scoring attempts to upset the Olympians’ season opener.
Goalie Dylan Bearce reeled in six saves for Oxbow (0-1). The O’s were also led by strong play from midfielder Aaron Thurston and defender Andrew Emerson.
Enosburg Falls travels to Bradford on Friday.
SPRINGFIELD — Despite being down 1-0 at the break, the Yellowjackets scored three unanswered goals to complete the comeback. Evan Strobl, Jonathan Dexter and Adam Dufour each scored a goal in the effort.
“We weren’t playing our best in the first half, but we made some adjustments,” said Windsor coach Steve Mulloy, whose team improved to 1-1. “The boys really stepped up in the second half. They made a lot of smart plays, and we were able to get the goals we needed.”
Jacob Singelais had five stops for the Yellowjackets, who host rival Woodstock on Friday.
ROYALTON — Carder Stratton scored on a free kick and Jacob Barry also produced a goal, but it wasn’t enough for the Wildcats as they were outshot, 14-5, by the visiting Minutemen.
“You could tell it was our first game,” WRV coach Alex Montano said. “We came out a bit nervous but settled as the game went on. Pleased to have had six boys play their first significant amount of time and contribute.”
WRV (0-1) visits Arlington on Friday for its first road contest of the season.
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Hurricanes fell to 0-2 in the season and host Fair Haven on Friday.
WESTMINSTER, Vt. — Quarterback Cole Jasmin was 26-of-33 for 369 yards and threw for five touchdowns as the Hurricanes picked up their first win in VPA seven-on-seven play.
Jacob Dwinell was Jasmin’s top target, catching nine passes for 126 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Dan Kelliher also pulled down two touchdown catches and finished with four receptions.
Kobe Peach hauled in a touchdown, too, finishing with 126 yards on nine receptions. Hartford (1-1) hosts the Terriers on Friday night.
WINDSOR — Owen Abrahamsen, Austin Gauld and Caden Lockwood each had a touchdown reception, but it wasn’t enough as the Yellowjackets dropped their first game of the season.
Jordan Place threw for two touchdowns and Jordan Place tossed another. Windsor (1-1) travels Friday to Brattleboro.
ORFORD — Playing in their season opener, the Raptors took 13 of their 21 shots in the second half and started to find some movement of the ball.
In the 61st minute, Cora Day scored a goal off a corner kick from Kylie Taylor. Rivendell’s next goal came in the 70th minute, when Adele Tilden’s shot put the ball over the hands of Craftsbury’s keeper and into the far corner of the net. Tilden’s score came on a pass from freshman Lauren Smith.
Tilden scored the Raptor’s first goal of the game in the 38th minute off a deflection. Day and Ryleigh Butler combined for the shutout. Rivendell (1-0) visits Leland & Gray on Friday.
NEWPORT — Kaeley Skakalski scored two goals and contributed an assist, and Sydney Gonyea and Molly Smith each added an assist and goal for the Raiders.
Lebanon (4-0) led by just 1-0 at the half until strong passing led its offensive attack in the second half, coach Amanda Valliere said.
Newport (0-5) plays host to Springfield (Vt.) on Thursday. Autumn Crowell made two saves in goal for Lebanon, which travels to Hartford on Friday.
WEST CANAAN — Hosting their first race in more than a decade, Royals senior Dirk Andrew set the 5-kilometer course record with a time of 18 minutes, 30 seconds, as Mascoma defeated Fall Mountain.
Gabe Rock placed second, and Mascoma’s Alayna Miller was the top finisher among the girls.
WINDSOR — Mid Vermont Christian’s Joel Roberts (20:33) and Rachel Horner-Richardson (23:31) placed first in their respective races in a multi-school meet at the Windsor Fairgrounds. Teammate Ben Pedi was ninth in the boys race with a time of 27:20.
Windsor’s Liam Attwood took 11th thanks to a finish in 27:20. Skylar Thibodeau’s time of 31:11 was good enough for 11th place.
SUNAPEE — Cardinals Finn Allen and Dylan Adamovich placed first and second, respectively, at Lake Sunapee Country Club.
Allen finished with a 1-over-par 36, and Adamovich carded a 38. Hanover’s Spencer Lawe finished with a 40, good for third place.
Finishing off scoring for Stevens was Reeve Wilkinson (45) and C.J. Naugler (46).
Marauder Ben Plottner shot a 41, and teammates John Hill and Casey Graham carded a 42 and 43, respectively.
Team scores: Stevens 165, Hanover 166, Fall Mountain 179, Kearsarge 190.
HANOVER — The Marauders collectively served 27 aces and had 19 kills as they swept the visiting Cardinals, 25-12, 25-9, 25-2.
Emily Gammell tallied eight kills and eight aces for Hanover, which improves to 3-0 on the season. Talia Daft added eight aces, and Alice Rodi served five.
“This group of athletes is really clicking, and it makes all of the difference,” coach Megan McFarland said. “When they play together as a team, the outcome is like it was tonight. Every person did something to contribute to this win.”
Stevens (0-5) visits Sunapee next Wednesday. The Marauders host Mascoma on Tuesday night.
