Norwich
“It’s close enough to Norwich center that people can go there pretty frequently but your still out in the woods,” said Alison Marchione, programs director at the Upper Valley Land Trust, which owns the property.
But with dogs come their waste and sometimes that becomes a problem for others who want to use the space.
“It can be an environmental problem,” Marchione said. “It’s a problem for people and pets. It’s also a problem for wildlife.”
A fundraiser being held from noon-2 p.m. this Saturday looks to address that problem by raising money for a pet waste station, or two. A $7-$10 donation is requested. Each station costs about $200.
The event is cleverly called Tails on Trails and invites dog owners to bring their furry friends for walk around Brookmead. Professional photographer Calvin Jones will be there to take photographs which will be available to download online after the event.
The event is also part of Giving Tuesday, which encourages people to donate to nonprofit organizations during the holiday shopping season.
“We were trying to find a way to do a fundraiser that was more than asking people to donate online,” Marchione said. And naturally, the UVLT wanted to include dogs. “We thought it would be a perfect opportunity.”
Dogs are allowed on the properties that the UVLT owns and manages, Marchione said. Most of the time, they need to be on leashes. At Brookmead, there are certain sections where dogs can run off leash.
By installing dog waste stations, dogs and humans can use the popular space in harmony. No registration is required for the event.
“It’s just a show up, bring your dog kind of a fun thing,” Marchione said.
