RANDOLPH CENTER, VT — Robert G. Cantlin was surrounded by family when he passed away in the Garden Room at Gifford Medical Center on March 12. He was born in Lebanon NH on May 12, 1928, the youngest of four children.
Bob, (as he liked to be referred to by those both young and old), married Virginia Haley in June of 1948. They were married for 72 years and raised their three sons in Lebanon.
He worked as a mechanical engineer at Cone Automatic and Split Ballbearing until his retirement in 1989. Bob loved retired life and he and Ginny made a new home in Randolph Center VT in 1995 to be closer to family. Their home had a revolving door, welcoming children, grandchildren and many of their friends, neighbors, as well as a few strays. He is remembered for his good nature and generosity.
Bob was active in civic affairs for all of his life. He volunteered in youth scouting and sports during his years in Lebanon, and was a host for the ABC program. Once a Vermont resident, Bob contributed time to the Randolph Area Food Shelf, Meals on Wheels and the Greater Randolph Senior Center. He very much enjoyed the friendships made through the ROMEO club (Retired Old Men Eating Out!).
He appreciated any time outside; feeding the birds, fishing, playing golf, cross-country skiing and walking his four legged friends. He had an extensive Jazz collection, but was perhaps best known for his love of the game of cribbage and for making an exceptional bowl of popcorn.
Bob’s biggest joy of all was spending time with his wife, sons and their families. He was a true baby-whisperer. He is survived by his wife Ginny, sons Tim, Terry (Betsy) and Tom, five grandchildren: Max (Pam), Mora (Marcus), Eric (Haley), Sam (Jarica) and Rose, three great-grandchildren: Felix, Caroline and Flynn, and several nieces and nephews, all of whom he adored. He was a patriarchal figure and opened his family, home and heart to many others, especially Michael Buel, Jenni Cooper, Jacob Nissen and Luna Frith.
A celebration of life will be held with the family at a later date. He can be honored by taking some time in nature and being kind, especially to those in need. Online condolences may be left at www.dayfunerals.com. Arrangements are by the Day Funeral Home.
