NEWBURY, N.H. — If you’re in the mood to see emerging spring flowers, consider stopping by The Fells Historic Estate & Gardens this coming Friday – Sunday.
Admission is free this weekend as part of National Public Garden Day on Friday, a national event that was started by the American Public Garden Association in 2009.
“At this point in May there is typically very little blooming, but a lot is about to burst open!” Lynn Mountford, outreach director at The Fells, wrote in an email. Early spring blooms are out in two gardens, she said, and flowering trees and forsythia will bloom “as soon as we get another warm, sunny day.”
“Other than that, other trees are heavy with buds and bursting more each day,” she said.
Highlights of the weekend include a free workshop about the nearly 1,000-acre estate’s heather gardens from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Friday. Representatives from the Northeast Heather Society will co-host the workshop.
Mountford described the free event in a phone interview as “an opportunity to come and play and work in The Fells.” Advance registration is requested.
From 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, Upper Valley garden writer Henry Homeyer will lead a $20 workshop called “Everything You Need to Know about Birds and Bees: How We Support Pollinators and Birds with the Plants We Grow.”
Visitors also can take their time strolling along the nonprofit organization’s 5 miles of trails along with viewing the emerging sculpture garden.
“By this weekend we’ll have 15 of them up,” Mountford said.
