NEWBURY, Vt. — The Newbury Conseration Commission has scheduled a pair of public events geared toward paddling on the Connecticut River and getting some of its scenic trails in order for the coming hiking season.

The NCC’s 16th Paddle the Border will be held on May 19, beginning from Community Field in Woodsville and ending at Bedell Bridge State Park’s boat launch in Haverhill Corner. The annual canoe and kayak event down the Connecticut allows for a leisurely trip, with the promise of a barbecue lunch and music at the end of the trek.

Organizers will have a shuttle available for participants and their personal equipment from 10-11 a.m. at Bedell Bridge. The launch point is across from Community Field, off N.H. Route 135, with a recommended departure time of 10:30-11:30 a.m. Volunteers will be on hand at the launch to help protect boats prior to their departure.

The trip should take about 3½ hours, where more volunteers will have the lunch going and the Strawberry Farm Band will be playing. All participants are required to honor safe boating practices to be part of the day.

Meanwhile, the NCC has set its annual trails day work day for June 1 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., with work scheduled for the Wells River Conservation Trails, the Cross Vermont Trail, the Blue Mountain Nature Trail and the Boltonville Nature Trail.

The NCC seeds volunteers to help keep all four sites in good shape by helping clear out winter blowdowns and cut back spring growth and brish. The NCC and the Cross Vermont Trail Association have received a grant to resurface the Wells River routes, and it’s important to get the prep work done before resurfacing can begin.

Volunteers are asked to bring weed whackers, brush cutters, loppers, shoves, rakes and chainsaws to help get the work done. Volunteers are asked to meet at the Blue Mountain Union High School parking lot in Wells River before heading off to the trails.
