Hanover girls earn bronze at rowing championships

Hanover High School came away with a bronze medal at the New England Interscholastic Rowing Championships with the girls third boat finishing third in the grand final.

Hanover’s third boat qualified for the grand final event in the morning heats when six boats were eliminated from a field of 12. The Bears then finished barely less than a second behind second-place Exeter in the grand final.

The third boat team was Milla Starkey (coxswain), Merritte Goodell, Caroline Chor, Lila Marchetti, Emma Hudson, Gracy Healy, Emilhy Klibansky, Lilian Van Citters, and Evelyn Swanwick.

“Hanover faced some of the fastest crews in the country at the NEIRA,” Bears coach Julie Stevenson said in an email. “They had arguably the best results as a whole program, and no public school finished ahead of Hanover in any race.”

Hanover sent six boats – three girls and three boys – to the championship on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.

Stevenson said the last time a Hanover boat qualified for a grand final was four years ago. The girls first and second boats placed fifth. The boys third boat finished fourth. The boys second boat won the Petite final by open water placing them in seventh place while the boys first boat finished ninth. There were 18 boats that qualified for the first and second boat races.

“The coaching staff is incredibly proud of how our whole team carried themselves at this event,” Stevenson said. “Their work ethic, competitiveness, respect, kindness, and heart made us excited and happy to be part of this community.”
