Pittsburgh — Former professional wrestling champion Bruno Sammartino was laid to rest on Monday in Pennsylvania, where he was remembered as one of the sport’s good guys.

Sammartino fled the Nazis from Italy as a child and built a career beating a string of bad guys in the 1960s and ’70s. He was the World Wide Wrestling Federation champion for more than 11 years over two title runs. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013.

Sammartino was buried outside Pittsburgh. Mourners, including WWE chairman Vince McMahon, remembered Sammartino’s humility and work ethic, even as he ascended the wrestling ranks.

Sammartino died last week after a two-month hospitalization. He was 82.

Gronkowski Out …Of Kentucky Derby

Louisville, Ky. — Gronkowski won’t run in the Kentucky Derby because of a slight infection that will keep the England-based colt from traveling to the United States.

Tom Ludt, who oversees Phoenix Thoroughbreds’ international operations, said Gronkowski spiked a fever last weekend and was treated with antibiotics. The colt is eating normally and responding to treatment, but Ludt said the owners want to put Gronkowski’s welfare first.

Ludt said on Monday that the owners are “beyond disappointed” to miss the May 5 race at Churchill Downs.

New England Patriots star Rob Gronkowski recently bought an interest in the animal and said he was excited to meet his namesake during Derby week.

The 3-year-old colt was undefeated in three races this year, including the Burradon Stakes at Newcastle on March 30, which earned him the first European slot in the Derby under Churchill Downs’ points system.

Binghamton, n.y. — Jeff McNeil had three hits and scored two runs, as Binghamton exploded for a season high in runs in an Eastern League win over New Hampshire.

Tyler Bashlor struck Connor Panas out with the bases loaded to end the game for his third save of the season.

Binghamton batted around in the first inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring six runs, including a three-run home run by Patrick Mazeika and a solo home run by Matt Oberste.

Trailing 7-3, the Fisher Cats cut into the deficit in the sixth inning when Vladimir Guerrero hit a two-run double.

The Rumble Ponies tacked on another run in the sixth when Oberste hit a sacrifice fly, scoring McNeil.

Eric Hanhold (2-0) got the win with two innings of scoreless, one-hit relief while New Hampshire starter Francisco Rios (0-2) took the loss in the Eastern League game.

The Fisher Cats left some scoring opportunities on the table, stranding 12 baserunners in the loss. Cavan Biggio homered and singled for the Fisher Cats. Max Pentecost homered and singled.
