Three cheers for the Hurricanes
Although the Hartford High School varsity basketball team was narrowly defeated in the state final, it can legitimately join the ranks of the two teams who are iconic in Hartford basketball history. (The two teams are from the class of 1929 and the class of 1933; both of those teams were incredibly successful, winning state titles).
An interesting side note is that the diminutive 1929 team became known as the Midgets, an approbation that became the Hartford mascot for all sports teams until it was changed to the Hurricanes in 1967. The 1929 Midgets went on to the national tournament in Chicago where they were defeated by Kentucky.
However, it is doubtful that either of those earlier teams had an undefeated regular season (22-0) to match that of the current team. State title notwithstanding, a strong case can be made for the 2026 squad to join the ranks of those other two famous teams in the history of Hartford High School Athletics, updating it now to the great teams of 1929, 1933 and 2026.
Go Hurricanes!
