No kings!

When King George III and the British Parliament imposed outrageous taxes on the American colonies more than 250 years ago, the patriots’ anger at ”taxation without representation” helped spark the American Revolution. Having seen the damage that could be done by arbitrary and tyrannical taxes, the authors of the U.S. Constitution made sure that Congress, not the Executive Branch, would control taxation (and tariffs).

Fortunately, our Supreme Court has struck down the tariffs imposed arbitrarily and unilaterally by Mr. Trump, who seems to want to rule as a king instead of governing as a President who respects the other two branches of government and adheres to the Constitutional separation of powers.

Further evidence of Mr.Trump’s desire to be a monarch are his endless “Executive Orders,” many of which are merely symbolic, not achievable, and sometimes illegal. Maybe Mr. Trump likes the idea of issuing “royal decrees” in the hope that his “subjects” will obey him. The good news is that many, many American citizens, following in the footsteps of the original American patriots, continue to say, “No Kings!”
