St. Simons Island, Ga.
Cook has gone 36 holes without making a bogey on the Plantation Course or the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club. He played Seaside on Friday and ran off four straight birdies on his opening nine holes.
Cook was at 14-under 128 and had a one-stroke lead over Brian Gay, who shot 64 on Seaside. No one else was closer than five shots going into the final two rounds.
Park Three Up At Tour Championship
Naples, Fla.
The lead might have been larger except for Park’s three-putt bogey on the 18th hole at Tiburon Golf Club.
Not only was she three ahead of Caroline Masson and Sarah Jane Smith, none of the other players vying for all the awards was within five shots. Lexi Thompson shot a 67 and wound up losing ground. She was six shots behind.
Goffin Sets Date With Federer
London
The No.7-seeded Goffin beat Dominic Thiem, 6-4, 6-1, at the O2 Arena on Friday to set up a semifinal meeting with Federer.
From 0-3, 0-15 down in the opening set, Goffin won 15 consecutive points to take control of the match, and never looked back.
Grigor Dimitrov defeated Pablo Carreno Busta, 6-1, 6-1, in the late match to become the first player to win all three round-robin matches on debut since Andy Murray in 2008.
Murray, Lendl Part Again
New York
Murray announced on Friday on his website that he and Lendl “have mutually agreed to end their coaching relationship.”
With Lendl guiding him, Murray won the U.S. Open in 2012, and Wimbledon in 2013, becoming the first British man in 77 years to win the singles championship at the All England Club.
Hart Leaves Braves
Atlanta
The decision announced on Friday was not unexpected given the hiring of general manager Alex Anthopoulos, who now has autonomy over all baseball-related decisions. Hart was given the title of senior advisor, but clearly had no real power.
The 69-year-old Hart calls it “a difficult decision” but says the team “is in great hands” with Anthopoulos.
Hart took over as interim general manager in 2014 after the late-season firing of Frank Wren and wound up staying on as head of baseball operations while the team groomed John Coppolella to take over as GM.
Coppolella was forced to resign last month after an investigation by Major League Baseball disclosed rule violations committed by the Braves in the international player market.
