Sharon — The Sharon Academy girls basketball team turned up the full-court pressure in the second quarter on Friday night, effectively knocking Mid Vermont Christian off of its rhythm.

The Phoenix’ offense responded by doing just enough to stay ahead, hitting their free throws late in the fourth quarter to hold on to a 45-44 victory.

The Eagles scored only two points in the second quarter against Sharon’s defensive shift.

“They came out and played harder in the second quarter,” said Mid Vermont coach Chris Goodwin.” Sydney (Goodwin) had five baskets in the first quarter. They knew she was driving. They shut her down in the second with their full-court press.”

Joclyn Johnson led the way with 14 points for Sharon (5-9). Grace Dorman had 12 points and Eliza Masteller eight.

Mid Vermont cut the lead to one point twice in the fourth quarter but couldn’t take the lead. Rachel Seale led the Eagles with 14 points. Sydney Goodwin had 13 points, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the lead back to one, and Danyelle Goodwin had 11.

“We came back, cut it to one a couple of times,” Chris Goodwin said. “They hit their big free throws late, banked a three at the end of the half. Those were just deflating.”

Mid Vermont (7-6) travels to Chelsea today. Sharon hosts Cabot on Tuesday.

Mount Royal 72, Farmington 58

Sunapee — Alexis Matte had a game-high 26 points and Jacinta Hogan had 23 as the Knights punched their ticket to the NHIAA Division IV tournament in its inaugural season.

“It was the best game we’ve played all year,” Mount Royal head coach Derek Tremblay said. “This was the one game that showed what the girls are capable of.”

The Knights (8-10) await playoff seeding.

Hanover 51, John Stark 43

Weare, n.h. — The Marauders survived early foul trouble and closed out the victory with an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter.

Diana Schwarz had 14 points for Hanover (13-5 overall, 12-3 NHIAA). Julia Golder added 11 points and Maddie McCorkle had eight points. Four Marauders starters sat out the second quarter with foul trouble; the Generals responded with a 19-7 run to lead, 24-20, at halftime.

Coach Dan O’Rourke praised the defensive work of Jessica Seibel. The Marauders visit Plymouth on Monday.

Lebanon 44, Souhegan 21

Amherst, n.h. — Lebanon’s team defense was suffocating against the Sabers, allowing only nine points in the first three quarters.

Anna Wolke and Josie Brown got split credit from Lebanon head coach Tim Kehoe for defending Souhegan star Mia Len, who only managed to score four points. Rebecca Wright had a game-high 15 points for the Raiders (18-1 overall, 16-0 league), who travel to Milford on Tuesday.

Newport 51, Stevens 43

Newport — The Tigers were 36-for-56 from the free throw line, in a game that featured a total 86 free throws, to snap a three game losing streak.

Kyrstin Kibbey was 13-for-18 from the line for a team-high 13 points. Alexis Hurd had 10 points and Anna Pysz had eight. Freshman Sydney Miller led the Cardinals with a game-high 14 points. 

“It was a physical game,” Newport head coach Ross Dole said. “We didn’t hit too many field goals because we were shooting free throws all the time.”

Newport (9-11 overall, 7-10 league) travels to Mascoma today at 10 a.m.

Woodstock 51Twin Valley 38

Woodstock — Madison Schulz had 22 points to help the Wasps (7-7) race past the Wildcats.

Woodstock snapped a 13-13 tie at halftime with an outburst of 38 points in the second half. Mariah Luce added 13 points and Natalie Stevens had 12 points.

“We were a lot better in the second half,” Wasps coach Timmy MacDonnell said. “We keep getting better and more balanced. It’s more just working together, moving the basketball and keeping composed.”

Whitcomb-Rochester 42 Twinfield 19

Rochester, Vt. — The Mountaineers took control early, leading 26-12 at halftime to beat the Wildcats.

Hayley Mears led a balanced Whitchester attack with 10 points. Sammy Barcomb and Amelia Mattrick each had eight points. Sylvie Coltey added six points. The Mountaineers (5-12) visit Black River on Monday at 5:30 p.m.

Craftsbury 33South Royalton 15

Craftsbury, Vt. — The Royals found buckets hard to come by in a tough loss at the Chargers.

“We did not click and didn’t get a lot of shots off,” SoRo coach Dave Davis said. “They played a nice zone defense on us.”

Kylie Hebard had five points to lead the Royals (5-9), who play host to Twinfield on Monday.

U-32 40, Thetford 35

Thetford — The Panthers couldn’t handle U-32’s defensive adjustment in the second half and were outscored, 24-11, in the final two quarters.

“It was a game of two halves,” Thetford head coach Eric Ward said. “We just didn’t handle their zone very well.”

Dahlia Klarich led the way with 11 points for Thetford (11-5). Regan Covery scored 10 and Danielle Robinson had nine. Reilly Flye had a game-high 19 points for the Raiders.

Thetford travels to Harwood on Tuesday.

Boys Basketball

Lebanon 59, Souhegan 33

Lebanon — The Raiders had a successful tuneup in advance of Tuesday’s upcoming visit from undefeated Milford.

Lebanon improves to 16-1 overall, 13-1 in NHIAA play. Milford carries an unblemished record of 14-0 in NHIAA action into Tuesday night’s matchup at Lang Metcalf gymnasium.

“It should be a good game. It’s been a long time since we’ve been an underdog in our gym and we haven’t lost a home game in a while. It’s going to be cool, hope we have a good (home) crowd,” Raiders coach Kieth Matte said.

Ryan Milliken had 17 points to lead Lebanon over the Sabers. K.J. Matte added 15 points, including four 3-pointers. Matt Eylander had 11 points.

Oxbow 69, Thetford 63

Thetford — Oxbow came out flat defensively in the third quarter, but flipped a switch in the fourth as the Olympians outscored Thetford 28-9 for their seventh win of the season.

Ben Emerson had a team-high 22 points for the Olympians. Lincoln Isley had 16 points and Matt Towle added 10. Emerson and Ilsley combined for 17 points in the fourth to help Oxbow pull away.

Dylan Thorburn had a game-high 24 points for Thetford (3-13). The Panthers outscored Oxbow 25-9 in the third but a 7-0 run to begin the fourth quarter turned the tide.

Oxbow (7-11) travels to Lamoille on Tuesday. Thetford hosts Montpelier at 2 p.m. today.

Mascoma 61, Laconia 45

West Canaan — The Royals’ dynamic scoring duo of Alex Schwarz and Devin Duhaime combined for 55 points.

Schwarz had 36 points and Duhaime made five 3-pointers on his way to 19 points. Senior Ryan Tucker made his first career start and played a strong game defensively according to coach Jim Barry. Tucker finished with six rebounds and committed no turnovers.

“I was worried tonight; we had a couple guys out. Everyone stepped up,” Barry said.

Sharon 48, Mid Vermont 25

Sharon — The Phoenix (11-7) built a 27-8 lead at halftime in cruising over the Eagles (2-14).

Harvey Kelley lead Sharon with 19 points. Sam Knoerlein added 14 points. Josh King had 15 to pace MVCS.

Sharon hosts Cabot on Tuesday. MVCS hosts Craftsbury on Friday and will possibly play a makeup game earlier in the week.

Mount Royal 57Farmington 49

Sunapee — The Knights further solidified their place in the upcoming New Hampshire D-IV playoffs with a quality home win over the Tigers.

Alex Normandin (18 points) and Andrew Normandin (17 points) paced the Mount Royal attack. Gus LaRose added 10 points.

“We pressed them most of the game. The guys played really intense defense and scored when necessary to keep the lead. It’s a big win for us,” Knights coach Matt McMenaman said.

Mount Royal (7-10) hosts cross-town rival Sunapee on Tuesday to close the regular season.

Stevens 70, Newport 44

Claremont — Parker Smith had 14 points and five assists as the Cardinals improved to 13-3.

Devin Burgess played in his first varsity game and scored six points for Stevens. Noah Spaulding had 17 points, Henri Bourque hit 12 points and Richard Bell had 11. Luke Come had nine rebounds.

Newport’s Ty Richardson led the Tigers with 15 points. Newport trailed 35-15 at halftime.

Stevens hosts Hopkinton on Monday.

Sunapee 66Concord Christian 35

Concord — The Lakers made eight 3-pointers to pull away from the Kingsmen.

Hank Vincent led the Sunapee attack with three from beyond the arc on his way to 13 points. Cade Robinson added 12 points. Zach Belisle and Austin LeBlanc each had eight points. Matt Nangeroni had 12 rebounds, 10 on the offensive end, to help the Lakers take control after the first quarter. Sunapee outscored the Kingsmen 37-14 in the middle two quarters.

The Lakers (5-10) host Pittsfield on Monday.

The Royals (9-6) visit Kearsarge on Tuesday.

John Stark 55, Hanover 45

Hanover — The Marauders were doomed by the Generals’ 16-7 run in the third quarter, dropping to 6-8 on the season.

Benny Gantrish led Hanover with four 3-pointers for 12 points. Charlie Adams added 10 points. Martin Paulsen and Caleb Putnam each had nine points.

Hanover trailed 25-21 at halftime and answered the Generals’ strong third quarter with 17 points in the fourth.

The Marauders visit Manchester West on Tuesday.
