New London — The High School Youth Group of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church is hosting a public forum titled “Guns, Rights and Safety: Searching for Common Ground,” 3-4:30 p.m. this afternoon at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 52 Gould Road, New London.

High school students Cohl Schusler and Lily Pelkey-Jacobson will speak alongside retired Air Force pilot Don Wright and the Right Reverend A. Robert Hirschfeld, the Bishop of the Episcopal Church of New Hampshire. High school senior Joseph Kealy and former town moderator Cotton Cleveland will moderate the panel, which aims to highlight and bridge the gap between varying opinions on gun control.

“We know this is a divisive issue, but if people actually listen to each other, we hope to have a respectful public conversation and maybe even find some agreement,” Kealy said in a news release.

The event is being organized by high school sophomore Kate Kelly.

“In the wake of many shootings, in particular the Parkland school shooting that left seventeen dead and seventeen injured, we have joined with students across the country to take a stand against gun violence,” Kelly said. “But in response to our marches, walkouts, protests, vigils, letters and emails, our elected politicians have done very little. So we are trying to show them how to take the next step — to listen closely and search for common ground.”

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served after the panel.
