Local Roundup: Stevens Pitcher One-Hits Franklin

Franklin, n.h. — Stevens High’s Ethan Johnson threw a 10-0, one-hit shutout against Franklin for his first varsity victory on Thursday afternoon, giving the Cardinals their fifth triumph of the season.

“He’s done a great job for us,” Stevens coach Paul Silva said. “He’s throwing strikes. … He can get the ball to the plate, get people out. He’s proven he can compete.”

Johnson allowed three walks and struck out five batters during seven innings of work.

Stevens freshman Owen Taylor hit a triple in his second consecutive game to pace the Cardinals offense. Drew Grenier, Derrick Stanhope, Aidan Cahill and Brendan Bean all provided hits.

The Cards led, 6-0, before tacking on four more runs during the seventh. James Aiken, a senior newcomer to the squad, got things started with a two-run single for his first varsity hit.

“He’s a hard-working kid,” Silva said. “It was pretty special.”

Stevens (5-4) plays a home-and-home doubleheader against Newport today. Game one is at 3:30, in Newport. Game two is 7 p.m. at Claremont’s Barnes Park.

Hanover 8, Goffstown 5

Norwich — Kegan Silovich led the Hanover offense with a three-run home run during the fourth inning, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored as the Marauders won their fourth in a row.

Hanover built an 8-2 lead after five innings before running into trouble in the seventh. Marauders’ starter Moises Celaya gave up eight hits, two walks, two earned runs and struck out six in 6⅓ innings.

Celaya, Joey Perras and David Lehmann each recorded an out during the seventh.

Hanover (5-2) travels to Windham today, its third game in as many days.

Woodstock 14Mount St. Joseph 2 (5)

Rutland — Owen Tarleton was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases as the Wasps improved to 4-5.

Caleb Webb was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Kyle Weirether was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Woodstock finished the game with 15 hits. Tarleton struck out six in three innings.

South Royalton 25Twinfield 0 (5)

Plainfield, vt. — Carder Stratton was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and four runs scored to lead the Royals.

Stratton also pitched 4⅓ innings, striking out five and giving up just one walk and one hit. Chris McCullough, Alvaro Sanabria and Dominic Craven each got their first varsity hit in the victory.

South Royalton (9-1) travels to Rivendell on Tuesday while the Wasps host Proctor on Monday.

Lake Region 15, Thetford 2

Barton, vt. — The Panthers had only two hits and scored both their runs during the fourth inning against the undefeated Rangers.

Thetford (4-4) hosts Harwood on Saturday.

Derryfield 10, Sunapee 0

Manchester — Lane Smith provided the lone hit for Sunapee (5-4).

“We ran out of pitching, ran out of gas,” said Sunapee head coach Tom Frederick, whose team hosts Farmington today.

Whitcomb-Rochester 20 Cabot 2 (5)

Cabot, vt. — Sammy Barcomb was 3-for-4 with two triples and a home run for the Mountaineers (6-0).

Freshman starting pitcher Chelsie Trask gave up no hits, three walks and two runs while striking out six during three innings. Emily Bean was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Fiona Vaillancourt was 1-for-4 with a home run.

Lake Region 7, Thetford 1

Barton, vt. — Lily Vonn pitched three innings in relief of Panthers starter Brooke Horniak, who left the game with a pulled hamstring. Jordan Mousley scored the visitors’ lone run.

Thetford (3-3) hosts a doubleheader on Saturday, playing at 11 a.m. against Harwood and at 1:30 p.m. against Rivendell.

Derryfield 4, Sunapee 2

Manchester — Ellie Frederick threw a two-hitter while striking out nine and walking three for the Lakers.

Sunapee managed only three hits, including a solo home run by Frederick during the top of the sixth. Hannah Cooney hit a double in the second.

The Lakers (2-5) host Farmington today, continuing a stretch of five games in five days.

Plainfield, vt. — The Royals outscored their opponents, 5-0, during the sixth and seventh innings but couldn’t complete the comeback.

South Royalton trailed, 9-5, after two innings. It scored two runs during the fifth inning, three runs in the sixth and another two in the seventh.

Hannah White led the way with two hits for the Royals. Blake Southworth, Lilly Hudson, Sierra Salls and Stella Jones also had hits. Paige Bellentine, Taylor Rogers and Ashleigh Brown all pitched, combining for seven walks in the loss.

South Royalton (2-4) hosts Thetford on Monday.

Randolph 3, Oxbow 1

Bradford — Maddie Fornwalt struck out 17 and provided three of Oxbow’s five hits in the loss.

The O’s stranded five runners in scoring position and committed four errors that head coach Carl Hildebrandt called, “crucial, the wrong errors at the wrong times.” The Olympians (6-2) finally scored in the seventh inning, intentionally walking Fornwalt to stonewall the late-game rally.

Woodstock — Lucas Piconi had five goals and an assist and the Wasps improved to 8-2, while dropping the Patriots to 2-9.

Field Willis had three goals and six assists, Caden White had two goals and an assist, Jed Astbury had a goal and two assists and Trevor White had two goals. Michal Schlabach also scored.

Woodstock, which graduated 13 players last year and has only five seniors this spring, hosts Burr & Burton on Saturday. The Bulldogs are only 4-5, but have played a more difficult schedule, including foes from Massachusetts and New York.

Lebanon 7, St. Thomas 2

Dover, n.h. — The Raiders won four of six singles matches and swept the doubles matches to improve to 7-2.

Pedro Izquierdo-Sacristan won, 8-4, at No. 1 singles. Owen Johnstone at No. 2 singles, 8-3, Seamus Hickey at No. 3 singles, 8-6, and Erik Spaulding at No. 5 singles, 8-6, also won their matches. In doubles, Sacristan and Johnstone won, 8-3, at No. 1, Brodie McPherson and Spaulding won, 8-3, at No. 2 and Hickey and Tyler Spaulding won, 8-6, at No. 3.

Rutland 5, Woodstock 2

Woodstock — Carl Gebhardt and Danny Drebber won at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, by identical 7-5, 6-2 scores, but the Wasps fell to 1-4.

“I was really impressed after winning close sets, they each really asserted themselves and took control of the second set,” Woodstock coach Dave Miles said.

Drebber’s win over Rutland’s Augie Louras was his first varsity singles win.

Derryfield 7, Hanover 2

Manchester — Marta Sanchez won her match at No. 5 singles, 8-4, and teamed up with Grace Li to win at No. 3 doubles, 8-3, as the Marauders fell to 9-2.

College Baseball

Shirley Named To All-District Team

Hanover — Dartmouth College senior outfielder Dustin Shirley was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Team in District I by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Shirley, a psychology major with a 3.75 GPA, was one of the 30 Senior CLASS Award candidates, all of whom excelled in the community, classroom, characters and competition.

The Los Angeles native leads the team with 28 RBIs, 67 total bases and four home runs and 21 runs scored.
