Here’s a look at Upper Valley residents who played varsity college sports this winter:
Women’s Basketball
Sophomore guard J.J. Daniell (Hanover) helped Amherst College capture its second NCAA Division III national title. It also won the 2011 crown and is 114-10 during the past four years, capturing NESCAC titles the past two seasons. Amherst (33-0) beat league rival Tufts for the third time this season in the title game. Daniell played in 28 games and averaged 10.5 minutes and 2.0 points. … Sophomore guard Lindsey Clark (Cornish/Lebanon) helped Maine-Augusta go 15-11. She started all 23 games in which she played, averaging 30.1 minutes and 6.6 points. … Senior guard Emily Kehoe (Lebanon) helped St. Joseph’s (Maine) College (24-5) win its second consecutive GNAC title and third in four years. The physical education major started three of 20 games in which she appeared and averaged 12.9 minutes and 2.7 points for the Monks, who lost in the NCAA Division III tournament’s opening round. … Clarkson was 16-11 with senior guard Stephanie Grobe (White River Junction/Hartford) starting every game and averaging 30.6 minutes and 10.6 points. … Colby-Sawyer (18-9) enjoyed the services of two Sunapee High graduates. Sophomore forward Anna Richardson appeared in nine games and freshman guard Lexie Hamilton started every contest, averaging 25.8 minutes, 10.2 points and 3.9 rebounds. … Green Mountain was 0-23 and is 5-110 during the past five seasons. Sophomore guard Suzy Moses (Strafford/Sharon Academy) and sophomore guard Rachel Moore (Sharon/South Royalton) were two of the Eagles’ 11 players, who included one senior and one junior. Moses played in every game and started 20, averaging 28.8 minutes and 6.9 points per game. Moore started 18 of the 19 contests in which she played and averaged 30.5 minutes and 2.6 points. … Norwich was 16-11 with junior guard Shyann Josler (Thetford) and sophomore forward Vanessa Fleury (Lebanon). Josler started every game and averaged 37.7 minutes, 9 points and 3.1 rebounds. Fleury appeared in 13 games and started one, averaging 14.6 minutes, 5.1 points and 3.5 rebounds. … Freshmen guards Lindsay LaPerle (Bethel/Whitcomb) and Kelsey Fogg (Hartford) helped Johnson State go 12-14. LaPerle played in 25 games and averaged 7.9 minutes and 1.3 points. Fogg appeared in 18 games. … Junior forward Mariah Ramos (Lebanon) was part of Lyndon State’s 11-13 campaign. She appeared in 23 games and averaged 14.7 minutes and 5.7 points. … Phoebe Parrish (Rochester, Vt./Whitcomb-Rochester) was a freshman guard for Castleton (17-9). She played in 23 games and averaged 7.7 minutes and 1.7 points. … The University of New England went 23-6, won the Commonwealth Coast Conference and reached the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament. Junior guard Sam McDonald (Lebanon) started 28 of 29 games in which she played and averaged 26.6 points and 9.7 points. … Junior forward Heather King (Lebanon) suited up for Springfield (20-9), starting 25 of the 26 games in which she played and averaging 25.1 minutes, 9.8 points and 5.7 rebounds. The Pride reached the ECAC championship semifinals. … Abigail Kelly (KUA), a sophomore guard at Bowdoin (21-5), helped the Polar Bears reach the NCAA Division III tournament, averaging 16.6 minutes and 8.4 points while playing in every game and starting three of them. … Sophomore forward Taylor Ong (KUA) helped Skidmore go 17-9 and reach the Liberty League title game. She played in 21 games and averaged 8.0 minutes and 2.0 points.
Men’s Basketball
Forward Hayden Tomlinson (Bradford, Vt./Oxbow) is a freshman at Johnson State, where he appeared in 20 games and averaged 7.9 minutes, 2.1 points and 1.2 rebounds per outing. The Badgers were 11-14. … Junior forward Adul-Malik Abu (Kimball Union Academy) helped North Carolina State go 15-17. He played in every game and started all but one contest, averaging 28.5 minutes and 11.8 points. … Southern New Hampshire (21-9) featured senior forward Devin Gilligan (KUA), who started every game and averaged 32.5 minutes, 20.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest. … Sophomore guard Andrew Cashe (Canaan/Mascoma) started 13 of the 32 games he played for New Hampshire Technical Institute (22-14), which reached the Yankee Small College Conference title game and the USCAA Division II national semifinals. Cashe averaged 1.6 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. … The University of Maryland-Baltimore County enjoyed the services of junior guard Malcom L. Brent (KUA). The Retrievers were 20-12, and Brent averaged 4.2 points while seeing action in five games. … Junior guard Oliver Tot (KUA) played in 31 games for William and Mary (17-14) and averaged 10.1 minutes, 1.1 points and 1.2 rebounds. Teammate Nate Knight (KUA), a 6-foot-10 freshman forward, started five of 31 games, averaging 17.2 minutes and 8.2 points. … Freshman swing man Cooper Williams (Meriden/KUA) was part of Carnegie Mellon’s 14-12 season. He appeared in 16 games and averaged 1.2 points. … New Hampshire was 20-12 with freshman forward Luke Rosinski (KUA) starting one of the 23 games in which he played. He averaged 8.3 minutes, 1.3 points and 2.3 rebounds. … Freshman Ross Gerber (KUA), playing guard and forward, averaged 10.9 points and 3.8 points for Catholic University in Washington, D.C. The Cardinals were 17-9… Freshman guard Travis Valmon (KUA) got into five games at Maryland (24-9). … The University of San Francisco (20-13) featured freshman guard Garrett Turner (KUA) and reached the College Basketball Invitational postseason tournament. Turner appeared in three contests. … Eli Frater (KUA), a sophomore guard at Bates (15-10), averaged 2.6 points per game while getting into 20 contests. … Haverford endured a 4-21 campaign. Sophomore guard Khalil Garnes (KUA) started 19 of 25 games in which he played, averaging 27.4 minutes, 11.1 points and 3.1 rebounds. … Junior guard Gus King (KUA) competed for Grinnell (Iowa) College, which went 16-7. King got into 13 games for the Pioneers. … Texas Tech was 18-14 with senior guard Devon Thomas (KUA), who arrived via Cloud County (Kan.) Community College. Thomas started 19 of 32 games and averaged 22.9 minutes, 4.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per outing.
Men’s Ice Hockey
Norwich was 27-1-3 and won the NCAA Division III national championship with three KUA graduates on board. Junior defenseman Connor Evangelista played in 29 games and had a goal and 13 assists. Sophomore defenseman Cam Beecy played in six games and had a goal and an assist, and freshman forward Jack Griffin played in seven games and had an assist. … Cam McCusker (Canaan) was a junior forward at Wesleyan (13-9-4), which posted 11 more victories than during the previous season. He played in 26 games and had nine goals and six assists… Brown staggered to a 4-25-2 season, the third consecutive campaign during which the Bears have posted fewer than 10 victories. Junior forward Tyler Bird (KUA) played in every game and posted seven goals, five assists and a minus-17 rating. … Junior forward Peter Bensen (Norwich/Hanover) played in six games for Bowdoin (8-16-1) for a second consecutive season. He has played in 16 collegiate contests overall and has two assists. … St. Lawrence was 17-13-7 and senior defenseman Gavin Bayreuther (Canaan) was its leading scorer with 29 points. He had 111 points in 142 college games and signed with the NHL’s Dallas Stars in mid-March. Ben Finkelstein (KUA) was a freshman defenseman on the same team and put up five goals and 18 assists. … Buffalo (N.Y.) State was 18-8-1 with junior goaltender Ryan Lund (KUA) seeing three minutes of action in one game. … Sophomore goaltender Eric Bogart (KUA) was the main starter for Fredonia (N.Y.) State, appearing in 19 games and posting a 9-8-1 record with a 2.63 GAA and .928 save percentage. The Blue Devils were 13-11-2. … Freshman goaltender Paul Leger (KUA) started seven of the nine games in which he played for Southern Maine (9-15-2). He was 3-5 with a 3.03 GAA and an .881 save percentage. … Army was 19-14-5 with freshman forward Dominic Franco (KUA) as its third-leading scorer with nine goals and 13 assists. … Brendan Riley (KUA) was a freshman forward who played in five games for Mercyhurst (Pa.) University, which was 15-20-4. … Jacob Paluch (KUA), a sophomore defenseman at Nazareth (N.Y.) College, played in 19 games as the Golden Flyers went 9-15-2. … Boston College was 21-15-4 with sophomore forward Chris Shero (KUA) appearing in three games. Classmate J.D. Dudek (KUA) had 13 goals and nine assists while playing in every game. … Connecticut College (4-16-3) featured sophomore forward Matt Michaud (KUA), who had one assist in 17 games. … Boston University was 24-12-3. Senior defenseman Doyle Somerby (KUA) played in every game and had two assists. Senior forward Nick Roberto (KUA) had five goals and eight assists and also dressed for every contest. … Senior forward Niko Rufo (KUA) had two goals and two assists in 19 games for Providence, which was 22-12-5.
Women’s Ice Hockey
Freshman defenseman Amanda Nelson (White River Junction/Hartford) appeared in two games for St. Michael’s College (4-21). … Trinity (Conn.) College was 9-13-3 with junior defenseman Caroline Howell (Lyme/Hanover) not recording a point in 25 games. She has four goals and eight assists in 75 college contests. … Freshman forward Megan Hayes (Hartford) played in 35 games for Rensselaer (10-24-2) and had a goal and two assists. … Union was 5-28-1 and captained by senior forward Ali Devins (White River Junction), who had three goals, five assists and 23 blocked shots. … Angela Augusta (KUA), a sophomore forward for Salve Regina University, played in 24 games and had three goals and two assists. Also on the roster was senior defenseman Brooke Morgan (Grantham) who had two goals and three assists in 26 contests. The Seahawks were 6-19-1. … Senior forward Michaela Igo (KUA) was a senior forward at Connecticut College (15-8-3). She had one goal in seven games with the Camels. … Northeastern (22-12-3) reached its third Hockey East title game but fell to No. 1 Boston College. Freshman forward Matti Hartman (Etna/Hanover) played in every game and produced eight goals and 10 assists. Hartman assisted on the winning goal in the conference semifinals to beat Boston University. … Amherst (14-8-5) reached the NESCAC title game with freshman forward Miriam Eickhoff (Hanover) putting up three goals and five assists in 26 games. Classmate and forward Eliza Laycock (Hanover) played the same number of contests and had a goal and three assists. Sophomore forward Sarah Wagner (Hanover) was scoreless, also in 26 games. … Dartmouth (7-21) missed the ECAC playoffs for a second consecutive season. Freshman forward Sabrina Huett (Plainfield/KUA) had one assist in 28 games.
Indoor Track and Field
University of Vermont senior Ian Weider (Thetford Academy) was fifth in the long jump at the ECAC/IC4A championships at jump of 23 feet, 7.25 inches. The Catamounts finished sixth at the nine-team America East championships, Weider coming in second at 23-1.75. His best jump of the indoor season was 23-8.75, slightly ahead of the 23-8 he used to capture the conference crown as a junior. … UVM senior Romario Bailey (Claremont/Stevens) was seventh in the conference championships’ 60-meter dash with a time of 7.03 seconds. … Williams College sophomore Kerry Swartz (Woodstock) finished 17th in the 60-meter dash at 8.80 seconds during January’s Smith College Winter Classic. … UNH senior Crista Hargbol (Sunapee) posted a career-best 9.56 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles during a December meet against Maine. The Wildcats were third at the America East championships. … Junior Martin Gradijan (Lebanon) set three personal bests this winter at Franklin Pierce. He ran a 4:28.13 mile, clocked 9:09.47 in the 3,000 meters and produced 16:15.93 in the 5,000 meters. Teammate and classmate Craig Telfer (Lebanon) also set three personal bests. They came in the 200 meters (24.03), 400 meters (57.01) and 60-meter hurdles (8.52). Franklin Pierce was fifth out of 11 teams at the Northeast-10 Conference meet.
Other Sports
Hannah Nice (Hanover) is a junior and captain of the women’s squash team at Vassar (11-6). She went 16-1 in the No. 1 slot and won each of her three matches at the national team championships. … Penn’s men’s squash team went 9-8 with Max Reed (Lebanon) going a combined 5-7 at the No. 7 and No. 8 slots. … Sophomore Katie Aman (Hanover) and freshman Georgia Houde (Meriden/Lebanon) were on the Middlebury College women’s swimming team, which finished fourth out of 11 schools at the NESCAC championships. Houde was 14th in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:57.04, four places ahead of sister and Bates junior Nell Houde (Meriden/Lebanon), who put up a time of 18:03.76. Bates finished fifth overall. … Castleton State’s men’s Alpine ski team posted its sixth consecutive top-ten finish at the USCSA National Championships in mid-March. Senior Matt Couture (Lyme/Hanover) finished 20th in the combined individual standings. Also on the Spartans’ roster was freshman Andrew Borden (Woodstock), who finished 17th in his first college race on Jan. 27. … Senior Halle Bergwall (Lebanon) competed for St. Michael’s Nordic ski team, finishing 62nd (1:02.36.3) in the 15K race at the Bates Carnival in late February and helping the Knights finish ninth out of 16 teams. … Brothers Austin and Noah Viens (Hartford) competed for Castleton’s wrestling team. Austin, a 133-pound freshman, was 3-16, while Noah, a 165-pound sophomore, was 16-15… Also going 16-15 this winter was Trinity freshman Steve Cerrone (Quechee/Hartford), who wrestled at 174 pounds. The Bantams were 5-10.… Junior Chris Washington (Hanover), a 174-pound wrestling competitor at Williams, was 3-14 this season. … The third-year Franklin Pierce women’s bowling team has benefited from the presence of freshman Katey Comstock (Hartland/Windsor). The No. 20 Ravens hosted and finished fourth at the East Coast Conference championships in late March.
