Zach Rhoades and Colby Washburn scored 12 points each and the Hornets’ defense held Chelsea to just six points in the third quarter during Wednesday’s 48-44 win over the Red Devils.
Gavin Beane added eight points, Marcus Sheldon had seven and Isaac Hodgdon six in a balanced effort for Whitcomb (1-2).
It was the first career varsity coaching win for the Hornets’ Jaren Jeffcoat, a former Norwich University 1,000-point scorer who took over the program this season.
“The team played very good defense, with the exception of foul shots allowed,” Jeffcoat said. “We did a good job keeping them outside the paint, making them take jumpers and rebounding it. Aside from allowing over 30 foul shots, they did a fairly good job defensively.”
The Hornets had a double digit lead in the fourth quarter.
“The game was pretty solidly in control,” the coach said.
Whitcomb is off until next Thursday, when it plays at Northfield in a makeup game from last Saturday.
Wells River, Vt.
“We have 14 girls on the roster, and 12 of them scored,” noted Thetford coach Eric Ward. “We still have some things we need to work on, but we’re trying to get to where we need to be.”
Although no one reached double figures for Thetford, Regan Covey and Kate Vaughan led the way with nine points each and Harlee Gray contributed eight.
The Panthers are at home against rival Rivendell on Saturday.
White River Junction
Kaylee Williams and Corey Lieberman led Hartford with six points each.
The Canes visit Thetford on Dec. 30.
Townshend, Vt.
South Royalton is off until Jan. 6, when it plays Whitcomb-Rochester in Bethel.
Tyngsborough, Mass.
Gariepy has 97 career points, according to Lebanon-Stevens coach Gary Smith, and is expected to become the program’s first 100-point scorer since 1997.
Nate Chickering added two goals and two assists and Aaron Damren had four assists for Lebanon-Stevens, which scored five consecutive goals in the second period.
Carter Adams added two assists, and Jon Cloud had his first varsity goal for the Raiders, assisted by Peter Elder.
Sam Lawrence added a single assist for Lebanon-Stevens, which hosts Bow on Friday.
Woodstock
Luc Issa scored from Lucas Piconi with 7:30 to play for the Wasps’ only goal.
Jason Drebber made 19 saves for Woodstock.
The Wasps face host Hartford in the Philippe Bouthillier Classic on Tuesday.

Cate Wagner had a goal and two assists, while Leslie McNamara, Mahler Meyerrose and Clare Gardner had a goal and an assist each.
Freshman Meredith Morhun scored her first varsity goal, joining Sarah MacCormick and J.J. Taube with one goal each.
Margaret Lee, Bryn Kable, Emma Tysinger and Maddie Lyons each had one assist.
Cici Baron (first two periods) and Clairee Yegian split time in net for the Marauders.
“Everybody contributed tonight,” Hanover coach John Dodds said. “Three defensemen scored, and we had goals from all three lines.”
Hanover hosts its alumnae game on Monday at 7:50 p.m. at Campion Rink. “All alumnae are welcome,” Dodds said.
White River Junction
Jasmine Wilson scored from Summer Parkhurst for the Canes to make it 1-0.
Maggie Gilman made 32 saves for the Hurricanes, who play at Harwood on Wednesday.
Brattleboro, Vt.
Anna Hepler (unassisted) and Holly Weglarz (assisted by Teal Bohen and Heather Blanchard) scored the early goals for the Wasps, Blanchard’s a redirection of a shot off the post.
Sadie Kuhn made it 3-0 in the second period, zinging one unassisted to the top-right corner.
The Colonels scored twice in the third period, their second coming with a pulled goalie and six skaters.
Bridgit Black made 24 saves for the Wasps, who visit North Country-Lyndon on Wednesday.

Brenden Halleck (138 pounds, pin, 2:58), Dylan Palmer (145, 10-4), Matt Hennig (160, pin, 4:55), Gavin Lovely (192, pin, 4:27) and Tyler Hall (heavyweight, pin, :42) all earned wins for Newport.
Garrett Harold (106), T.J. Hubert (126), Mike Wilkinson (132), Tyler Sharron (170), Michael Tremblay (195) and Cameron Hall (220) all won via forfeit.
Newport next wrestles on Dec. 30 in the Nor’easter Invitational at Hollis-Brookline. The event was postponed last Saturday due to snow.
Hanover
Ben Hoffer placed fourth with a score of 243.9 for Hanover.
On the girls side, the Marauders’ Amelia Wallis was second to Pinkerton’s Zoe Freedman, with Wallis scoring 241 points.
Hanover’s Hazel Garrity-Hanchett was fifth with a score of 152.5.
Thirty-nine divers from nine schools competed at the event.
Hanover visits Oyster River on Friday.
Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Dartmouth junior Kate Letkewicz led all scorers with 20 points and finished the day just one rebound shy of the double-double. Isalys Quinones had eight points and six rebounds, while Big Green senior Fanni Szabo contributed all eight of Dartmouth’s bench points.
The Big Green led 32-30 at halftime.
Dartmouth hosts Albany next Thursday.
