Bethel — The Whitcomb High boys basketball team took an outside route to help its coach get his first career win.

Zach Rhoades and Colby Washburn scored 12 points each and the Hornets’ defense held Chelsea to just six points in the third quarter during Wednesday’s 48-44 win over the Red Devils.

Gavin Beane added eight points, Marcus Sheldon had seven and Isaac Hodgdon six in a balanced effort for Whitcomb (1-2).

It was the first career varsity coaching win for the Hornets’ Jaren Jeffcoat, a former Norwich University 1,000-point scorer who took over the program this season.

“The team played very good defense, with the exception of foul shots allowed,” Jeffcoat said. “We did a good job keeping them outside the paint, making them take jumpers and rebounding it. Aside from allowing over 30 foul shots, they did a fairly good job defensively.”

The Hornets had a double digit lead in the fourth quarter.

“The game was pretty solidly in control,” the coach said.

Whitcomb is off until next Thursday, when it plays at Northfield in a makeup game from last Saturday.
