For decades, I’ve been such an admirer of the work Valley News photographers do every day. With sensitivity and thoughtfulness, they tell stories with their cameras that equal the great work reporters are doing with pen and paper.

Working in the newsroom mostly as an editor these days, I feel a little rusty when I head out to help with my camera when we are short-handed.

At Hartford High School’s commencement in June, I found the seniors gathering for last-minute prep before their ceremony. It’s a chance to find a moment that is outside the ordinary.

Across the room, I belatedly noticed Eric Young giving his mother, Laurie Young, a quick hug. He seemed excited for the day as he gave classmates the same treatment. Hoping I didn’t miss it, I watched and waited for a couple of minutes until Eric looped back for another round.

It’s one of my favorite photographs of the year because it shows Eric’s joy and celebration of accomplishment.
