West Canaan — A sizable helping of Hammonds lifted the Mascoma High field hockey team to a 3-2 overtime victory Tuesday over Winnisquam.

It was Alyssa Hammond who scored the winning goal, redirecting home a Michaela Dowd shot that was headed wide of the net. Dribbling the ball the length of the field before dishing it off to Dowd was Kayla Hammond, the scorer’s cousin. Thrilled to witness it all was Royals coach Jenn Hammond, mother of Kayla and aunt of Alyssa.

“We started out flat and slow, so we told the players at halftime that we need to play like the team that had beaten Berlin in our last game,” said Jenn Hammond, whose squad improved to 5-2-0.

Justine Martin’s goal off an Elizabeth Jones assist eight minutes before halftime opened the scoring. However, the Bears scored twice before intermission arrived, the second tally coming with just 2 seconds to play.

Mascoma rallied quickly, however, Kayla Hammond scoring 42 seconds into the second half. Overtime arrived with seven-on-seven play and the Hammonds, both juniors, figured in the winning goal.
