Claremont — A fire on Saturday afternoon at a home on Cat Hole Road, believed to have been started by a battery charger on an ATV, heavily damaged a two-story attached garage but fire crews were able to stop the spread of flames to the main house.

Fire Chief Rick Bergeron said in a news release that two firefighters suffered minor burns but were treated at the scene.

The fire at 52 Cat Hole Road was called in just after 2 p.m. and Bergeron said when the first firefighters arrived, there were “heavy fire conditions” and the flames were spreading to the home.

More crews arrived and using two hoses on both the second and first floor of the garage and cutting a vent hole in the garage’s roof, Bergeron said they were able to stop the fire’s progress “just short of the main house.” The fire was called under control at around 3:15 p.m.

The main part of the house sustained heat, smoke and water damage, the chief said. The battery charger on the ATV was inside the garage.

The garage’s second floor, with a family room and two other smaller rooms, sustained heavy damage.

Bergeron said the home’s owner is listed as Antoinette Sicard, and the owners said the property is insured.

With no hydrant nearby, tankers from Charlestown, Cornish, Newport, Plainfield and Meriden assisted with supply water.
