FAIRLEE — Residents rejected the idea of additional police coverage by Orange County Sheriff’s Department in a 162-116 vote on Town Meeting Day.
Town officials had said the proposal to spend nearly $31,000 for additional coverage by sheriff’s deputies would add 20 hours of coverage a week, supplementing a part-time officer who is on duty just 10 hours a week.
The $1.15 million operating budget was approved 194-81, and the highway fund and capital budget also passed easily.
Peter Berger was unopposed for a Selectboard seat.
