NEWPORT, R.I. — Newport batters tagged Upper Valley for nine runs in the opening two innings en route to a 12-2 NECBL rout of the Nighthawks at Cardines field on Friday night.

Will Carnley (Troy), normally one of Upper Valley’s most reliable starting hurlers, couldn’t fool the Gulls (16-12), lasting just two innings against the onslaught.

Hudson Haskin (Tulane) drilled a two-run homer to highlight a four-run first innings for Newport, which tagged on five more runs in the second to end Carnley’s night early. The Gulls finished with 16 hits off four Upper Valley pitchers.

The Nighthawks (16-12) had nine hits in response but left 11 runners on base. Cole Frederick (Jacksonville State) went 3-for-4, Gehrig Anglin (Wright State) was 2-for-4 and David Marcano (NJIT) and John Hosmer (Davidson) delivered RBIs for Upper Valley, which hosts Valley at the Maxfield Sports Complex on Saturday night at 6 p.m.
