Local Roundup: Sunapee Skiers Win Opening Meet

Hillsborough, n.h. — The Sunapee High girls alpine ski team started its season off with a win in a slalom meet at Crotched Mountain on Tuesday.

The teams took to the slopes for a pair of slalom races, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Jackie Balch led the Sunapee girls, finishing second in the morning in 42.56 seconds and fourth in the afternoon in 47.16 seconds. Ellie Frederick was third in both, clocking in at 42.60 in the morning and 47.14 in the afternoon. Maddie Austin was second in the afternoon race with a time of 46.26 seconds.

The Sunapee boys finished third overall, Carson Garland leading the way in 10th place in the morning with a time of 47.54 seconds. Teammate Jackson Cooney was 16th in the opener.

“It was a very good first race day. Our team has some things to work on, but I was very pleased with how we skied today,” Sunapee coach Jack Iacopino said.

Isaiah Stephans led the Newport boys, finishing 12th (48.65) and 15th (52.63). Donny Bowman took 13th in the second race for the Woodsville boys. Else Bielarski was 30th in the first race for the Woodsville girls.

Girls Basketball

Mascenic 49, Sunapee 38

New Ipswich, n.h. — It was going to happen eventually: After three-plus seasons capped by three NHIAA Division IV state championships, th Lakers saw their 75-game girls basketball winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Vikings (2-1).

Sunapee struggled on offense for three quarters, trailing 25-12 at the half and 35-16 entering the final period. Freshman Fiona Nolan scored all 10 of her points in the fourth quarter, part of a 22-point period for Sunapee that proved to be too little and too late.

Shelby Babin led the way for the Vikings with a game-high 22 points. Kalleigh Durkee matched Nolan’s 10-point night for the Lakers.

The Sunapee girls hadn’t dropped a game on the hardwood since falling in the D-IV finals to Hinsdale in 2014. The Lakers visit the Pacers tonight, then conclude a four-game road trip at Colebrook on Friday.

MVCS 41, Chelsea 26

Chelsea, Vt. — Rachel Seale had 11 points, 11 rebounds, six steals and six blocks to lead a balanced Mid Vermont Christian attack at Chelsea.

Hayley Goodwin led MVCS with 12 points. Sydney Goodwin added seven points. The Eagles outscored Chelsea, 23-6, in the middle two quarters to pull away.

“We kept getting stops. It was a great job on the defensive boards and we were able to grind out enough points,” Eagles coach Chris Goodwin said.

MVCS is off until Jan. 4, when the Eagles visit Northfield.

Mount Royal 46Wilton-Lyndeborough 26

Sunapee — Alexis Matte had 21 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals to lead the Knights (3-0).

Mount Royal led from the start, building a 24-4 lead at halftime. Sophie LaRose added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Knights. Amy Alterisio had four points, five rebounds and three assists.

The Knights host Newmarket on Thursday.

Newport 61, Raymond 30

Newport — The Tigers showed their stripes early, opening the game with a 17-0 run before putting the game away with 20 points in the third quarter.

“The girls played really tough defensively and got a lot of easy baskets,” Newport coach Ross Dole said. “It was a well-rounded night for everyone. The girls are sharing the ball well.”

Selena Coronis led the Tigers (2-1) with 15 points. Alexis Hurd added 14 points and Anna Pysz had 13.

Newport is back in action tonight, hosting Windsor.

Colebrook 46, Woodsville 43

Woodsville — A 39-point burst in the second half by the visiting Mohawks was enough to hand the Engineers their first loss of the season.

“Their intensity offensively and defensively picked up in the third quarter, and ours didn’t,” Woodsville coach Russ Wilcox said.

The score was knotted up, 40-40, with 90 seconds left before Colebrook closed out the win with a layup and four free throws. Lily Kinder had 21 points for the Engineers, including three 3-pointers.

Woodsville (5-1) hosts Rivendell on Jan. 3.

Fall Mountain 44, Mascoma 33

Langdon, n.h. — The Royals (1-4) battled one of NHIAA Division III’s remaining unbeatens through the night after spotting the Wildcats (5-0) a 9-2 lead after one quarter.

Behind Nicole Williams’ nine points and Michaela Dowd’s six, Mascoma closed to within a point in the second half before Fall Mountain pulled away. Chrissy Craig scored 16 points and Morgan Beauregard netted 15 — all on five 3-pointers — for the hosts.

The Royals will return to Fall Mountain for its holiday tournament next week, starting against Littleton on Tuesday.

Monadnock 48, Stevens 21

Claremont — The Cardinals (2-2) came out on the short end against the visiting Huskies (4-0).

Sydney Miller led Stevens with seven points. Monadnock took control with 16 points in the second quarter to build a 23-12 lead at halftime.

Boys Basketball

Mount Royal 70Wilton-Lyndeborough 64

Sunapee — The Knights (3-0) won a battle of attrition, losing two players to fouls but getting a 12-point fourth quarter from Alex Normandin to overturn a game-long deficit.

Mount Royal trailed by two points at the half and 10 entering the final quarter before using a 25-11 final period for the win. Normandin finished with 31 points to lead the way.

“We put the pressure on them, started getting to the line and just stayed tough,” said Mount Royal coach Matthew McMenaman, whose team hit 23 free throws on the night.

Andrew Normandin scored 14 points for the Knights before fouling out. Louis Larosaliere chipped in 11 points. Mount Royal hosts Newmarket on Thursday.

Oxbow 66, Woodstock 59

Woodstock — The Olympians (2-0) scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to top the host Wasps (1-1).

Lincoln Ilsley led the visitors with 17 points. Matt Towle added 15 points and Ben Emerson had 12. Tegan McKnelly chipped in 10 points for Oxbow. The Olympians trailed, 39-38, heading into the fourth quarter.

Christian Wood led Woodstock with 20 points. Caleb Webb added 13, and Griffin Van Niel had 10 points.

The Olympians host Stowe on Friday. Woodstock visits Bellows Falls on Thursday.

Woodsville 70, Colebrook 35

Woodsville — The Engineers clamped down defensively in the first quarter, leading 27-2 after the first eight minutes.

Garrett Olsen led a well-balanced Woodsville offense with 18 points. Adam Cataldo added 10 points. Corey Bemis and Billy Green each had eight points. The Engineers made seven 3-pointers as a team, including two each by Green and Cataldo.

Woodsville plays host Hanover to open the Marauders’ holiday tournament on Tuesday.

Chelsea 49, MVCS 37

Chelsea, Vt. — Behind Jake Colby’s 24-point night, the Red Devils held the Eagles (0-3) at bay.

Dylan Patel topped the Mid Vermont Christian book with 15 points, backed by a dozen from Daniel Robinson and seven from Cade Paquette. Ronald Johnson contributed 13 for Chelsea (2-1).

MVCS is off until a home date with Claremont Christian on Jan. 2.

Websterville 55Whitcomb-Rochester 41

Bethel — The Mountaineers were unable to dig out of an early 13-point hole against the visiting Warriors.

Eddie Bray led Whitchester with 16 points. Zach Rhoades added 13 points. Websterville led, 19-6, at the end of the first quarter.

The Mountaineers (2-2) host Chelsea on Thursday.

Girls Hockey

Hooksett, n.h. — Julia Tibbits and Lena Nowell each had a goal and an assist for the Raiders (1-2) at Tri-Town Arena.

Ella Lindsay and Lily Barber had a goal apiece. Makayla Maccioli had two assists and Celia Barnett had one.

Senior goalie Halle Drew stopped 28 shots. Lebanon-Stevens was outshot, 36-28.

Lebanon-Stevens hosts Berlin on Dec. 27.

Men’s College Soccer

Big Green Players Honored

Culver City, Calif. — Dartmouth senior Wyatt Omsberg and freshman Dawson McCartney were honored as part of the Top Drawer Soccer Men’s Division I postseason awards on Monday.

Omsberg was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI first team, a year after the was named to the third team.

McCartney also was named Ivy League rookie of the year in November.
